I have about 7 different schemas hashed out, but I think I'm tossing most of them and going with a human ranger...

str 12
int 11 (Illiberal, Gothic, <random>)
wis 12
con 10
dex 10
cha 12
starting coin: 60sp

Name: Leudigar of the Vale
Human Tracker
Alignment: Lawful (this will be the biggest challenge, by far!)
Level: 1
HD: 2-2
Hit Points:

Equipment:
Backpack, 1 week standard rations, bedroll, waterskin, coin pouch
Padded Armour (10sp, AC7, 10lbs)
Iron cap helmet (10sp, -1AC, 5lbs)
Iron-rimmed shield (10sp, -2AC, 10lbs)
Sword (15sp, 5lbs)
Dagger (3sp, 2lbs)
Spear (3sp, 3lbs)
Tinderbox (1sp)
Torches (6) (1sp, 5lbs)
Sacks, Large (2) (4sp)

Coins/Treasure:
3sp

Encumbrance: 72lbs
Movement: 12"

Idiom: Home destroyed and family murdered by a party of goblins riding wargs, Leudigar swore an oath to try and help rid the Hinterlands of the evil creatures. It wasn't until later that he heard about Ket and realized just how many of them there might be...

Notes:
From the Germanic name Leudagar which was derived from the elements leud "people" and ger "spear". He fights for his people! And... and a wolf. Oh, and a crow.

Setting things up nicely for the introductory encounter with our goblin ratcatcher (tentative title: Bloodbath in Scene One)

Yes, well... a bridge we shall cross (or burn?) when we come to it!

Don't forget The Kingdom of Men is of vaguely Germanic descent...

Ideas for names can be had here (among other place on the net)

So we have a M-u, Ranger, Rat Catcher so far... Good stuff. I'm still waiting to see what we are missing before deciding but I'll trash my ranger idea now that have one.

How would Luitger-whose-family-was-murdered-by-goblins feel about adventuring with a guore? Probably better than he would enjoy traveling with a goblin! :)

Evil-twin-dwarf ratcatcher would have pretty amazing stats. But I am growing to like Boggs the neutral Str 16 dwarf ratcatcher@ I picture him as extremely athletic, moving through the underworld parkour-style, with simian grace. Look at the size of those hands; I bet several of those 16 points are in grip strength alone. ;)

Nothing wrong with having two rangers in a group, Mike! It can be a very broad category, you know, as far as character concepts go - trackers, hunters, Forest protectors, bounty hunters, scouts, Forest runners (think: Robin Hood), combat specialists. Two rangers could be completely different on a character level and bring very different things to the table.

I say go for it.
