I'm seriously fine with basic graph paper and ink and a cell phone pic, WOTE. As long as we have a general idea of where we've been and what our directional options are, that's all we need.
Or, as Mike says, party mapper.

If you use Google Docs, you can make simple maps in their version of Excel and the party can edit it as well, to indicate their PCs' positions, etc... Easily shared.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
I like the idea of the players managing their own maps, but I still need to provide "something" even just for basic orientation, before the players could start quizzing me on more specific details, and pacing out distances between doors etc. I like the idea of using a shared spreadsheet, especially seeing as it is automagically online. I'll have a go at setting something up for those poor unfortunates currently in the underworld

It frightens me that you think them unfortunate when I was thinking it wasn't such a bad thing...

Just kidding. If I had a choice between being in a cool, silent underworld with a bunch of hardcore heroes, and being alone and pursued by multiple purple worms in the midst of a desert sandstorm, I know where I'd prefer to be

I agree... I wouldn't want to be in Wen's shoes right now.

Here's one another DM of mine showed us, for a chat game:

It's a little fiddly to get your head round it at first, but once you've got that you're good. Plus you can do a screen grab and post that.
I'm not sure if the save and load functions work properly (my understanding is that it's a work in progress).
Anyway, something you can check out.

Gridmapper looks like it has great potential Coffee, thanks for the link.
Now I am in danger of spending a bunch of time coding on that thing...

Nooooo! Be in danger of game updates three times a week!

Post-It note maps are fine!

I think I am getting in about three updates a week (which feels way too slow to me), but because the players are currently across three different threads, it feels more like one update per week to any player.
Post it notes and scribble pads in general are great for quick drawing... but then I have to get them from a bit of paper onto your screen. Still thinking about it...
