Thanks! I'm having fun with it; but it is also a bit stressful. Will be nice to be back to my normal box-sized projects after this...

It's a pretty cool piece of wood. I was lost in the grain and trying visual the tree... :) Very nice hope the stress passes and you get to enjoy what "ye have wrought".

Might be hard to visualize that with this layout, Mike. This top is made of of two consecutive slabs, but one of them was rotated 180 degrees and then set next to the other. That makes it so the live edge naturally slopes down on both sides. If I'd just bookmatched it (flipping one slab over like you're opening a book), the grain would match well, but I'd end up with one live edge sloping down on one side and one live edge sloping up on the other. Plus, the table would be notably wider at one end and more narrow at the other because of how the tree grows. By rotating one piece 180 degrees, I even out the width and get the live edges I want.

The slabs started out at about 28" - 30" wide each, so... it was a pretty sizable tree. Judging by the riftsawn growth rings, these pieces were a few off from the center one, so the tree was maybe closer to 40" diameter? But you can't use the center pith in anything, because it isn't structurally sound, so that would have been removed from that slab. I'd love to have had a chance at one of the two 18" wide quartersawn pieces that resulted from it. Maybe I'll check with the sawyer and see if he still has them; chances are good they went a long time ago, though.

Anyway... that might help you picture the tree a bit better. On the left side, the nearest end was towards the bottom of the tree.

Sorry it's been slow lately guys. I was intending to do an update last night, but instead my three year old had a meltdown. Meanwhile, I have just about recovered from the longest flu I can ever remember having. Has taken me four weeks to get (mostly) over it, but I've almost beaten it. Thanks for hanging in there :)

Meltdown? Never heard of it.

Glad you're on the mend, WOTE.
