OOC: Thanks for the cover DoctorX. Let's hope some of us get through this to patch you up.

Ways, what is the general layout of the battlefield? Can Ulric cast the Anthracite Sufferance at the wargs near him and not risk hitting his comrades?

The battlefield is an all-in-melee. Anyone can more or less be anywhere within the snarl of combat within a one minute turn, so an area effect such as the Anthracite Sufferance would hit randomised targets. Since Ulric has some kind of control over directing it (by sweeping his hands in an arc, like thus), I'll allow that he could stagger the odds of hitting enemy to 2/3 and friends to 1/3 (if you so described this intent in your casting of the spell).

OOC: Sounds like a good deal, right guys? Guys? Hey where did everyone go?

How many targets could be hit by the spell?

Good question... let's say it functions in much the same manner as the very similar 1st level magic-user spell: Color Spray.
##### Color Spray
(affects: special, duration: 2-12 turns, range: 12") 2-7 seeing creatures are rendered unconscious by a dazzling glare of clashing colors. Those nearest to the magic-user are always affected first, sheltering those farther back. Heroic-types are allowed a saving throw versus spells to negate the effect and superheroic-types are unaffected.
So the implication is that the Anthracite Sufferance will hit 2-7 creatures.
