A sniper with darkvision is pretty terrifying once you realize the implications: a heavy crossbow has 24" range, and our dungeon levels are only 40" wide. Assuming he had a clear line of sight, this guy could shoot you with total impunity, from halfway across the map!

The shooter must be somewhere nearby, but do we think such an obviously strong and powerful creature is hiding from us? Noh half asks Carc and half asks the party. Are those bolts too big to be used as spears?

Bilfur walks over to the crossbow with his still lit torch and lights it up

Any objections to Bilfur's plan, to burn up the crossbow?
As to the bolts, they aren't rigid enough to use as melee weapons, but Noh thinks they could be used as throwing javelins.
OOC: In many editions of the game, druids are not proficient with javelin, but that seems silly to me, so I'll allow it in our house rules. Seems to me that any class that can throw a spear should also be able to throw a javelin. It's the same basic mechanics.

objections sure.. does Kiplyn stop him no... 1) don't see how a torch would light up a crossbow with out building up a fire first or dosing it in oil. 2) That thing is probably worth a pretty penny. 3) I thought Hobbits where lawful, how did we get a Chaotic Pyromaniacs in the party

"Yes, yes, yes..." says Robur. "Burn that thing. It's obviously meant for terrible things..."
"Your know," he says stuffing his mouth with a cheese and sausage sandwich with mustard, and stating the obvious as if he wasn't fully listening to the previous conversation. "This thing is obviously larger than those giant man people - you know humans...."

If Bilfur's attempt at burning the crossbow doesn't work, Dame Simonetta will simply cut the bowstring using her sword.
"And where is the cave-dweller?" the Dame ponders aloud. "Unless we missed a secret exit, there is no way out of here but the way we came."

The crossbow is now a little bit singed, and the string is cut. Are you taking the bolts to use as javelins? (Or just keep using your slings?)
Dame Simonetta brings up a very good point about "no way out of here but the way we came." The mystery cave-dweller must have left in a hurry and gotten out just ahead of the party, if they didn't even have time to grab their preciouss crossbow.

Robur looks a little fancifully at the long spear-like bolts for the crossbow, and decides to take one and use it as a javelin later.

"All right, all right," Dougal mutters, "Let's quit faffing about and get the hell out of here!"
"Let's head back out and see what's on the other side of these arrow slits."
