Ulric curses the smoldering wreckage of the lantern and the weak will of some of his companions.
"No I have not seen this before Highbough. There must be something to the scent and taste of this fruit. A drug of some sort no doubt. Perhaps the victims of the fruit simply lie still until they die and serve as fertilizer for this plant."
Ulric seems lost in thought for a moment then leaves the lantern to cool down.
"I believe Wibert had more torches."
Ulric fishes through the halflings belongings by the feeble light of Highbough's candle until he finds a torch, the lights it.
"Let's get the rest of our fellows out of this room. Hey, now. What's wrong with Desmond?"

It is clear not all is well with Desmond, however. The poor fellow has gone from a shivering to a kind of rough trembling, and now is progressing to a violent shaking -- and all the while a crazy smile is stretched gaunt across his face! As his shaking progresses he even gives off a few small giggles, as if this is all some pleasant joke.
But the sweat all over him says otherwise!
