It is the tribulation of the short-legged people to run slower than the long-legged ;D
Maybe our halfling cook should consider signing on a hireling *just* to carry him around so he can keep up with all the "long-legs." :p

Desmond, your adventure begins... now.

You've been out hiking for a day or two. Well, a few days, really, you've lost your way on account of not having a map, which you must have forgotten. Or misplaced. Nevermind... you're sure there was a town hereabouts someplace. Just over that hill most likely. Or the next. Anyways, you'll find it tomorrow, most likley. Or the next day. Hold on now... what's all that racket?

You trudge up to the next ridge and espy a group of fighting-Men apparently engaged in some serious fighting with a pair of monstrous bears!

Meanwhile, in the thick of the fighting, initiative is rolled (1d6; Owlbear1=4, Owlbear2=4, Pelenwin=5, Dieter=2, Mads=2)

With Thorgim fallen, Pelenwin presses the attack fiercely (1d20=18) delivering a sluicing cleave of his bloody pole-axe for (3dd=5,1,1) 5 more hit points, causing the Owlbear to squeal in anquish, it's eyes burning hot yellow now in its rage.

The bear slashes back (1d20=10) with it's huge black talons, knocking the axe aside and then (5dd=1,2,3,3,4) tearing Pelenwin's white chain coat open and goring his chest for 6 hit points, pitching the bold knight to the cold Earth, from whence he does not rise.

Mads seizes the opportunity to withdraw from the fighting as the first Owlbear retaliates against Pelenwin and the second bear swipes at Dieter just as he gives the command word for his enchanted ring. The angry fighting-Man launches himself into a powerful leap as the 9ft tall bear pounces, scarcely evading its leathal swipe!

With their allies withdrawing, Highbough, Olaf and Ulric all loose thier missiles hoping to cover the retreat. (3d20=8,17,5) Highbough and Ulric both miss their mark, but Olaf's aim is true (1dd=2) but his missile merely clips the enraged beast.

Gentlemen, your intentions for the following round?

If there is a retreat, Highbough joins it without hesitation. Otherwise he will hurl a dagger from his perch on the ridge.

Wibert may have low wisdom but he has the strange feeling people are laughing at him when they are not looking at him, but can't put his finger on why. Now if he had a four legged mighty steed to ride people around would respect him. Wibert remembers his donkey (a true steed for a halfling) he used to ride and imagines riding it now to be quicker.

Back to Earth Wibert takes stock of the situation. With Thorgim fallen there seems no need for close combat. He shouts out, "Fall back and finish them off with missile weapons less more of us die this day". Wibert will use his bow to shoot arrows from the ridge.

Desmond calmly reaches inside his shirt and pulls out a small silver tube. Filling his lungs with as much air as possible, he blows a long, continuous stream of air through the tube.

As he blows, he looks at the large creatures to see if it has any effect on them. If it does (and that effect isn't to make them charge him), then he'll continue blowing into his whistle.
