1) How much room do we have to work with.
It's an 80ft wide, approximately circular space littered with detritus and the remains of numerous dead, partially hidden in a blanket of chill mist.
2) Do we have the right weapons in the hands of those who need to go toe to toe?
I think Heroes can attack with normal weapons. I wouldn't have anyone levels 1-3 engage in melee without a silver weapon. I suspect the Ire Spear would be quite effective here. Dorgan would be happy to let anyone who wanted it to borrow Mads Cold Iron Axe. It would be interesting to "test" its power in the hands of a non-Hero to see if it is indeed enchanted, or just more puissant in Dorgan's hands.
3) Can we get off a missile volley/Magic attack before hand to hand.
Currently, Josiane has them pushed back so missile attacks would work.
4) Any other sneaky things we can do.
Fire. If anyone has oil, that worked well.
I have a Detect Magic for afterwards though.
This could indeed be useful, although it might be worthwhile to save for the future.
So, if we got Olaf and Highbough down there to join in with Josiane, Dieter, and Armando, we could finish the remaining shadows in a couple of rounds (assuming good fortune with rolls).

Ok so
Olaf Wen and Highbough go down plus anyone else willing to go hand to hand with them, take the Axe. Olaf and Wen can fire silver arrows at the shadows to start the round add to this any thrown oil and any spell power Ulric might have.
Then Dieter Highbough Josiane and who else can rush in to attack.
Does that sound about right?

The only thing we'd want to do is make sure we could get back up out of the hole. Dorgan is going to be incapable of any heavy lifting for... hours? Days? I don't know. Would be worthwhile to leave a few folks up top.

The deadites aren't going anywhere. I'm more concerned about the werewolves and false nuns. We still don't rightly know where The Gustave is, either. I say we get out, take the fight to the more dangerous foes, recoup, and then scour the place for treasure.

Since this is an OOC general strategy sort of discussion...

If things aren't made clear with examination, knowing exactly what to grab, aside from obvious loot - coins and jewelry and gems - might be useful for expediency's sake. And to make sure one doesn't have to haul out three heffelumps in weight of mundane gear left behind by hapless souls.
Without looking anything up, I believe the recovery rate from being sapped of strength by shadows is 1 point of STR/hour. But that's purely going off of mostly-1E memory, so possibly not accurate or correct for this particular situation/rule set.

This is a legit argument but it's also possible that we find something down there that's useful in a fight with the more dangerous foes.

Our objective is to take the abbey. We really have no where to run to at this point (it's a long way back to the elves). I think we need to focus our remaining strength on defeating the cultists and not just trying to gather some loot and run. If we do succeed in taking the abbey we can cleanse and loot the pit at will.
Currently Ulric only has Anthracite Sufference that would be somewhat useful in the pit. I say "somewhat" because it is a short range spell that may injure comrades in a crowd. I also don't know what effect it would have on shadows.
I would rather save this spell for burning werewolves. Ulric also has Web and Charm Person prepared. Useful for werewolves and cultists, not so much for shadows.
If the group consensus is to attack the shadows, Ulric will go down and assist. But as was mentioned we need to leave sufficient strength above to haul everyone back up.

Strength not just to haul everyone up, but to defend ourselves against attack. ways won't let us loiter up here with a rope for too much longer.

Pretty sure you guys already made enough noise to warrant a wandering monster check.

Uh, aren't you the guy who saw Dieter and Dorgan fall into a pit and walked away while the others worked frantically to save us?
Highbough tried to fall in the pit with Dieter and Dorgan, but unfortunately made his saving throw.
