But if they were hit hard enough, they'd be too dead to fight back...
Just a thought.

If Dorgan had a vote (and a STR greater than 3), he'd second this notion.
My only worry about scouring the pit with fire is what valuables you'll destroy in the process.

Indeed! Magical fire is potent, even against magical items!

A scalpel, maybe, instead of an atomic bomb, then?

It's bad enough when the cleric gets to destroy undead but the holding them at bay while the party kills them gets old.

My two cents on the "turning" question...
...I've always run it as Turing means "turned away or forced back"...Priest thrusts out holy symbol and says "Begone!" and the Vampire/evil undead cringe back from the holy symbol. At every opportunity they try to come forward, but as long as the priest is showing the symbol and commanding them to "Stay back!" they are held at bay. High level undead get a saving throw...I've usually said "high level" is any undead creature 3 times the level of the Cleric attempting the turn...for example 2nd level Cleric to 6 HD undead monster.
OTOH, I've also given Clerics a "Dispel Undead" ability (10 minutes, once a day x class level) that actually dispels/kills/breaks/dissolves undead
when struck by the cleric's holy symbol. Only high level undead having a saving throw.
The cleric can have one or the other active, but not both at the same time. IOW, he is either repelling (turning) the undead, or attacking. If he is turning them, that gives him and his party some respite where the undead are hampered in trying to attack...so the party can run away, for example. If he is attacking with Dispel Undead the undead can fight back, even kill the cleric if he is overwhelmed, but with every successful hit by the cleric an undead monster goes "poof!"

Folks, we seem to be "stuck" a bit at the current decision making juncture. The debate appears to be about killing the remaining shadows vs. getting out of the hole.
I hate to sound like the greedy mercenary (well, not entirely true, I should be ashamed but I'm not) but we really should be finishing off these shadows and searching the remains.
From a metagaming point of view, this is a great chance for the party to get some gold and probably some magic items.
From my PC's perspective, Dorgan would really like to make sure no one else suffers the same fate he and Dieter almost suffered.
Not to mention, there's XP just sitting there, waiting for someone to take it! Ways is sitting at home, somewhere in Australia, shaking his head and wondering what he needs to do to get us to win some treasure. He keeps putting it in front of us and we keep walking away...

This and this, all day long...

Why wouldn't finding the lost and presumably wounded/dying party members be our top priority? I'm a little flabbergasted we are scumming for XP and treasure without solving the mystery of what happened to Desmond and Gustave.
(edit) On the other hand, if Desmond's player is telling us "go for it!" then that is a valuable piece of meta-game information.

Uh, aren't you the guy who saw Dieter and Dorgan fall into a pit and walked away while the others worked frantically to save us?

hehe... er, um....
ooops?
Specifically, I was referring to this, though:

Best advice is to put forth a plan of action so that the others can follow it. Hoping that we all jump to the same conclusion is iffy, and dealing with undead is never anyones favorite thing to do.
So...
1) How much room do we have to work with.
2) Do we have the right weapons in the hands of those who need to go toe to toe?
3) Can we get off a missile volley/Magic attack before hand to hand.
4) Any other sneaky things we can do.
I'm all for trying to take these things out, I was all for it last time we stumbled on the pit. Let's get it organized so we don't end up losing anyone.
As far as spells go I got nothing useful left, I have a Detect Magic for afterwards though.
