OOC: Ok, so I went back through the threads and cannot find mention of a connection between the Sisters of Mercy and the Temple of Thuul. I think that we are getting ahead of ourselves. Ways, can you share some insight here that Ulric may possess (but I do not).

While Highbough stays hidden in the foliage, his hawk eyes scan the roofline of the compound to identify the tallest/largest/most strategic structures. He's looking for: a keep, a chapel, a cloister---someplace where valuables and relics like the ones we are seeking might be kept under guard and key---and more importantly, a high perch from which he can get a better look around. Is the weather calm enough he can employ The Acclivitous Smaze without the winds dashing him to the ground? He thinks these things while waiting for any alert or sign of trouble from his friends.

Ulric is not an especially religious sort, but all Men of the Kingdom must surely be aware that Thuul is The One God, and also is simultaneously all of the Lesser Gods. He is Them, and They are Him. That is The Enigma of Thuul (the theologians have been studying this conundrum for centuries).

Or so it has been preached by the Men of Faith and the various orders of Templars for time out of mind.

There are scores of lesser churches and temples devoted to various lesser Gods, Saints, Demigods and so on, but all of these ultimately owe homage to Thuul by some more or less circuitous route.

The Sisters of Mercy are somewhat disjoint from the "mainstream" temple of Thuul. They pay homage most directly to Saint Madeleine, the Healer. But they certainly recognise the Ultimate Authority of Thuul.

The Apple Orchard
(Highbough and Olaf)

Highbough notes from his perch that the roofs of the abbey are reasonably uniform in height. The only structure that stands out is a narrow bell tower, which right this moment begins to toll once more. The lamentable clang rings out repeatedly at a more urgent pace that it did earlier this morning.

The old elf is confident that, in the lee of the abbey wall, he could employ the Smaze to surmount the defenses.

Josiane pulls up abruptly, gazing at Ulric in some surprise.

"This is a house of the Faith, Lord Ulric," she says calmly; "And that woman's words and actions have given me cause to doubt her. I have no wish to give battle if it can be avoided, but neither will I walk blindly into a trap and lead you all hence into the bargain."

"Let us please withdraw to the gate, rejoin the others and proceed from there," she adds in what she hopes is a patient voice.

"And I agree with Dorgan," she whispers to the sorcerer; "Perhaps Sister Meena might vouchsafe more information to her favoured son. It would be well for us to have some idea of the recent history of this place, agreed?"

"Calmly everyone!" he says to the others moving back toward the gate with the group.

Looking down at Sister Meena, Ulric is as reassuring as possible.

"Fear not my good Sister. My friends are merely confused. Why would the Prioress not answer the knight's question? Do I have anything to fear within these walls? My friend still requires aid after all; just look at him."

Ulric motions toward Desmond/Mondes.
OOC: I asked Sister Meena a question a while back. It seems to have gotten lost in the shuffle.

Ulric mutters something under his breath, but continues to slowly fall back toward the gate with the crowd.

He keeps Sister Meena close to him, but is wary of any attacks from her.

"Sister Meena, do not fear, I am your friend. Are you a member of the Sisters of Mercy? Are you a follower of Thuul or another god?"

Highbough makes a helpful ear-cupping gesture, alerting Olaf (with his limited human hearing) to the tolling of the alarm bell.

Does Highbough think there's a watchman up in the bell tower? Or is it rung by a rope from below? Any sign that the rooftops are being watched, snipers and so forth?

What material is the tower's construction? Is the bell within range of the Torrefaction?

Dorgan hears the bell toll and he knows the proverbial jig is up...

"This ain't good. We lost any advantage we mighta had. Back to the door now. Let's at least get everyone inside."

OOC: At least I assume he can hear the bell, I don't think we went that far inside...
