Gonna have to go with the cat-and-mouse -- one good hit would finish poor old Dieter. And I'm just here to delay the Giant, anyway. I don't expect to finish him off.

(But if he gets in close...)

Most of the oil was left behind in the mess hall -- but Gustave still carries one flask of lantern fuel, and Olaf carries a special flask of magefire oil. Striking up a flame might be tricky in these circumstance, but Ulric could attempt to use his sorcery to fire the bridge...

As he's helping Koch back onto the bridge, Desmond sees Andaros fall to his death.

He cries in anguish, "Noooo!" then falls silent.

He remains in the moment, however, and pulls on Koch's wrist with all his might to get him back up on the bridge.

After Koch is safely back up (assuming that happens, of course), Desmond shouts, "Clear off the bridge! Make way for the others to cross!"

At the soonest opportunity, he will cross back over to the safe side of the ravine.

Koch is hauled to safety by Desmond and Pelenwin as Boris skits awkwardly across the rickety bridge (1d6=4), clinging to Gustave's rope all the way.

Olaf is already on the ravine floor, and Victor is descending rapidly after him as Boris has almost completed his crossing...

Up top, the Giant swings its colossal club at Dieter with unstoppable force -- Dieter dives aside as quickly as he can (1d20=17) but the Giant is savage quick and brutal strong! Before Dieter can get clear the metal shod tree trunk impacts like a meteor and the entire upper story of the tower top collapses violently, sending huge rocks tumbling into the ravine after Victor and Olaf!

K-U-R-R-U-N-C-H-!

Dieter is blind and deaf and tumbling somewhere in a maelstrom of breaking and falling rock taking (9dd=6,5,5,4,4,3,3,2,1) 14 hit points!

Unknowingly Padrig's metal shield takes the brunt of the terrible punishment (10 hit points) as it is torn apart -- certainly saving Dieter's life, and he suffers a mere 4 hit points amid the devastation!

Huge rocks tumble into the ravine (1d6; Victor=6, Olaf=6) but miraculously neither Victor nor Olaf are struck in the avalanche!

Moments later Dieter somehow finds himself coughing and staggering out of great dust cloud amid a ruinous pile of broken rock! He's battered, but still alive... somehow. Then the ground trembles thunderously with massive foot steps and the huge shadow of the Giant looms up behind him!!

(Dieter is now AC 4 and has 6 of 12 hit points remaining)

Gustave flinches as the gigantic boom rebounds down the canyon, squinting as a huge plume of dust and grit wafts over him and the others perched on the broken bridge. He is less surprised, however, to see Dieter climb out of the fuming devastation still clinging to his sword. The sight brings a grin back to his shapely face after the loss of the northman.

"Dieter!", he yells, gesticulating with one hand while clutching the rope with the other, "Time to leave!".
