Inside the tent it is very dim indeed. Josiane makes only a brief impression of a large ring of seat -- like to an amphitheatre -- before a (or two?) large, barking dog rushes right at her!

Josiane pulls her face back a-haste from the viciously snapping fangs, and is greatly relieved when Dorgan dumps the canvas just in a nick of time, and the dog's head only bumps her through the tent wall rather than mauling her face.

The dog (or dogs) continue to bark and growl.

What now?

There is the clopping of heavy foot steps upon a stair...
