The company are drawn to it eagerly, like hungry wolves crowding over a kill.

The fruit is heavy, smooth and cool in Desmond's small hands, and the scent of it is strong and sweet. This thing must surely be filled with honey to smell so.

The skin of it seems modestly tough, however, something like orange peel, but smoother and more spongy. Desmond cannot immediately break into it with his fingers, so he reaches for his knife while all his fellows crowd around, their eyes glued upon the fruit...

The Halfling warrior pulls a gleaming knife from his belt and cuts into the dark thing efficiently. A dark treacle oozes from the incisions, dripping abundantly to the dirty floor, but Desmond hard notices the stuff running over his fingers as he cuts, for the smell of the fruit is sweet and heady and has all of the hungry adventurers salivating.

Desmond cuts out a pie-slice of the puce fruit. Inside it is something like a black-current pumpkin. The flesh is firm but oozing with juices. It smells delicious!

Desmond shoves the slice into his mouth, barely taking note to keep hold of the rind.

Desmond takes a first bite, and discovers the fruit is every bit as sweet, juicy and delicious as it smelt. Nay better -- one hundred fold better! He finds he has devoured the first slice already and has no desire to stop there. He attacks the entirety of the sweet fruit with a voracious gusto, oblivious to the hungry hands and eyes all around him.

And then none of that matters one iota. Desmond has transcended all mortal concern and reached Taste Heaven.

Nothing. Else. Matters.

All the others in the room are all but trembling with the impossibly desirous smell of the fruit as Desmond gorges into it before their very eyes, spilling to glorious stuff all over his face, his front, and the floor too.

Saving throws are made all round (1d20; Dieter=14, Ulric=18, Gustave=14, Pelenwin=3, Wibert=4, Highbough=16, Koch=5, Boris=10).

Dieter, Ulric and Highbough resist its strange pull with difficulty, but Gustave, Pelenwin, Wibert, Koch and Boris are all overcome by a desperate, uncontrollable need to taste the fruit!

It is perhaps fortunate that Halflings are so competent at putting food away, for in only a few moments Desmond has all but devoured the dark fruit, leaving only a few scraps of flesh clinging to the rind and the hard stone in its center.

But even these dregs are irresistible. Desmond's eyes close as he swoons flat on his back like a rag doll, and all of a sudden Gustave, Pelenwin, Wibert, Koch and Boris and all jumping on top of one another feverishly scavenging the fruit scraps and licking the juices off Desmond's inert face, body and even off the floor.

It is utter mayhem.

Highbough will never understand the Shire-folk and their insatiable desire to cram their mouths with food. He hoists his spear and studies the strange plant for a head, maw, or other central anatomical features.

Ulric looks to Dieter and Highbough, the only other two not taken by madness for the fruit.

"I fear that they have been taken by a dark magic or drug or worse," he says watching the other lick the halfling's face. "We need to get them out of here any away from that plant."

Ulric attempts to cut down a fruit and tosses it back out the open door.

"Hey, here's one! Go get it!"
