ooc: She was already fighting defensively, so the conditional IF means, on failure continue fighting defensively. BUt I think you want that from Doctorx mouth not mine.

IF by some miracle Wen comes close enough to Highbough to retrieve the silver dagger he would do that in a heartbeat. The odds are looking long and grim to the Elf but he will do his best to aid his friends.

[pure-speculation]Highbough whisks the silver dagger from his belt and tosses it high in the air toward Wen's foe, calling out to the young elf as he fights his own opponent. Wen sees his opportunity and dashes toward the lofted blade, leaps high and snatches it mid-air as it falls, and drives into the back of the werewolf's neck in a slam dunk backstab, slaying it outright! The crowd cheers! :D [/pure-speculation]

If she is unable to withdraw, Josiane slams her shield into her opponent and attempts to push it off the wall.

Olaf drops to a seated position with his shield up protecting his head and thrusts his sword between the were wolf's legs in an attempt to trip it up and make it stumble...maybe it can be pushed off the wall, or more easily attacked by Torben and Dieter if it is off-balance.

Gustave flicks the rope over the wall, and bravely lowers himself down into the fume choked courtyard without having tested the stuff. Not halfway down he realises the miasma is unfriendly, as his strength is already left him, and he can only slide further down the rope and into the stuff, hitting the ground roughly whereupon he retches up the complete contents of his guts and feels wholly nauseated.

Meanwhile, the werewolves have the advantage in the close in fighting on the walls, deal out the hurtin' to Dorgan, Beringar, and Josiane in particular; they suffer 6, 2, and 1 hit points respecitvely. Only the Gods know how Beringar is still on his feet.

Opposite, Torben, Olaf, and Dieter can't reach the werewolf on top of the bell tower, and loose sight of it altogether as vanishes over the tower top.

As this is happening, the great fiend of burning tar surges through the chapel wall proper and into the churning vapors--its ominous foot falls shaking the earth--and issues a screaming white hot ray from its only eye. The laser line cuts directly at Ulric who scarcely throws himself flat in time to avoid the deadly beam; the heavy stone lip of the wall right behind him is instantly consumed in a flash of white sparks and fire and a moment thereafter the 3ft wide section of stone is utterly gone!

Around this the fighting continues; Neither Dorgan nor Desmond can make any advance against their snarling foes, but Highbough pushes his enemy back upon his spear causing it 4 hit points, before Armando strikes the same monster from behind, driving his silver dagger deep for 8 hit points of damage, slaying it. Josiane takes a brave hit before madly rushing her foe and forcing it--kicking and screaming--over the edge of the wall where it is briefly swallowed into the smog before hitting the hard ground with sick crunch (5 hit points of falling damage). Wen tries to likewise charge Desmond's opponent, but he is deflected harmlessly away.

Ulric's sorcerous missiles, meanwhile, continue to zip through the melee like sparrows; one misses again but this time the other two smash into the Tar Fiend's chest delivering it 10 hit points of damage, and knocking it back a step. It's noticed that, for sure.

| Mechanics

Initiative is diced, and where such things are of consequence:
Werewolves=4, Players=2, Tar Beast=3.

The Werewolves
W0 vs Highbough d20=7 miss.
W1 vs Desmond: d20=3 miss.
W2 vs Josiane: d20=17 vs AC4, hit. d6=1.
W3 vs Dorgan d20=18, hit. d6=6.
W4 vs Berigar: 4d20=16,10,12,3 vs AC5, one hit. d6=2!
W5 near Olaf, Dieter, Torben: Climbs down courtyard side of the bell tower, out of reach.

The Tar Fiend
Tar Beast issues a baleful beam from its eye which targets (1-4=Ulric, 5-6=Wen: 1d6=3, Ulric)
The Firestarter must himself save vs wands or be combusted. 1d20=13! He lives!

The Players
Alas, Olaf, Torben, Dieter have no opponent in reach.
Dorgan vs W3 d20=12, miss.
Gustave climbs down into the fumes, and must save vs poison. d20=3, fail. So he succumbs to a terrible weakness.
Highbough vs W0 d20=14 @+1, hit. d6=4.
Armando backstabs W0 1d20=20 @+4 hit. 2d6=8. Slays it!
Desmond vs W1 d20=11, miss.
Josiane vs W2 rolls an overbearing attack 3d6+1=18! vs 4d6=15. She successfully barges it from the wall, and into the courtyard. 10ft fall causes 1d6=5 hit points.
Wen vs W1 rolls an overbearing attack 1d6+2=4 vs 4d6=13. He bounces off!

Ulric's remaining missiles:
One vs werewolves 1d20=11 @+1, hits a randomised target, but unless it is Ulric himself (AC9) it will be a miss. 1 in 12 chance of it targetting Ulric 1d12=3. Miss.
Two vs Tar Fiend 2d20=19,18 @+1. Two hits! 2d6+2=10 hit points of damage. |

Wen will take a defense stance and try to aid Desmond, perhaps the Werewolf will drop his guard enough to allow the mighty hobbit a chance to slay him.

Is it possible for Desmond to blow on the silver whistle while Mondes concentrates on fighting the werewolf? If possible, that will be their action this next round. If not, then they will continue fighting the creature in front of them.

Dorgan is getting frustrated that his actions are not sufficiently Heroic enough, now that's he gained Name status. He redoubles his efforts to defeat the foe in front of him.

Torben

While the tar-fiend is distracted, Torben will attempt to scale down into the courtyard using his rope (60ft hemp) -- hoping he can find someway to anchor it. If he manages to not get vaporized in the process, he will attempt to sneak past the fiend and into the chapel.
