Highbough crests the ridge and observes the ferocious beasts below. He seeks nearby high ground, such as a boulder or outcropping, that will put him within spear-hurling range on the following round.

Does Pelenwin the brave rush headlong in with Mads, or contrive some other plan?

Wibert feels very small with all these giant sized beasts ahead. He will let fly a arrow at the shaggy beasts, if it is not safe to do so he will sneak in for a back attack if possible keeping to any cover, for he is small and doesn't want to be stood on.

Ulric keeps running until he reaches the ridge crest overlooking the battle below.

"Sounds like trouble ahead. Maybe my magic can be of use here?"

OOC: I'm not sure how long it will take Ulric to arrive at the scene of the battle, but he will try to move into a position where he can use the Anthracite Sufferance. Even if he cannot directly hit the beasts, perhaps the fire will startle them.

Ulric was one of the farthest away, and he paused to search Fix and take his purse. It seems likely he will be on his way to the ridge for the first round, and arrive at the ridge partway through the second round.

I will post a scratch map this evening.

Boris, Gustave and Ulric all hasten down the length of the gully, while ahead of them, Highbough clambers swiftly up the rocky face which overlooks the gully with typically Elvish grace, but Wibert finds himself too far from the fighting yet to make use of his bow.

At the front Dieter, Pelenwin and Mads dash toward the swaggering monsters as they swipe and roar at Thorgrim still, smashing one of the fallen treasure chests and scatting its contents in a rain of silver.

Olaf drops into a one kneed skid and, still sliding down the ridge face, glares hard at his target down the shaft of his arrow. He lets fly even before his slide ends (1d20=20!) and bounds to his feet again amid a cloud of dust as his arrow soars over his allies' heads and strikes true (2dd=5,6) for 6 points (what a shot!).

Hardly a moment after Olaf's missile screeches past, Dieter barks the command word and The Ring of Gambado launches him mightily into the air in an impossible 20ft high and 80ft long arc. He appears to be galloping in the air, then summersalts at the appex of his flight...

Initiative is rolled (1d6; bear1=6,6, bear2=5,6, Thorgrim=6-1).

The first monstrosity howls ferociously as it swipes at Thorgrim with huge taloned forelimbs (2d20=9,9), but the stalwart Dwarf amazingly manages to fend off its blows, even though doing so punches him back paces at each blow. He forgoes any opportunity to retailiate, merely gritting his teeth as the second monster squeals a banshee's hurricane blast at the arrow wound it receives from Olaf, and -- perhaps perceiving Thorgrim as the cause -- launches its own vicious attack! Thorgrim again parries the first staggering blow, but the colossal force of it leaves him reeling (1d20=2,17) and defenseless against the monster's second strike (5dd=4,4,5,5,1) that tears through the Dwarf's tough hide carapace and the flesh on his back and left shoulder as though it were silk thread!

Thorgrim suffers a gruesome 10 hit point wound... just as Dieter turns about in mid-air and lands with a great dusty thump behind the monster, driving his sword heavily (1d20=13) down its massive back (2dd=2,5) and opening a red gash for 7 hit points that certainly gets its attention!

A moment later Pelenwin and Mads leap up to the broken cart and mule, and bound over it slashing at the first monster defiantly (2d20; Pelenwin=18, Mads=11). Mads can only distract the beast, but it is enough for Penelwin to bring home an almighty swipe of his pole-axe, slashing savagely at the beast's chest for (3dd=2,4,5) for 5 hit points of damage.

As all this occurs, Thorgrim numbly lets go his faithful hammer, then -- strangely slowly -- eases himself to an awkward sitting position as the monsters roar and squeal at their new foes about him.

"Well, ain't that a somethin'?" utters Thorgrim to himself, staring far, far off for a moment, before closing his misty eyes and exhaling for the last time...
