Mads, Dieter, Olaf and Pelenwin are the first to come over the low ridge at the top of the gully in which they left the cart, wherein there is a sight to see!

Thorgrim is still some 40 yards further on, with a pair of great shaggy beasts rushing at him. The monsters gallop in on all fours as would a huge bear, and smash into the cart at force, toppling it entirely over! Thorgrim somehow dives free of the impact, but the terrified mule isn't so quick, and tumbles down, squealing. The monsters then rear upon their hind quarters, towering over twice the Dwarf's height! One rips at him with its massive, shaggy limbs finished by great black talons, but the other snaps its huge yellow beak over the mule's thrashing head, and with a powerful jerk, snap's the poor creature's neck.

The oversized masses of dun white fur dive at Thorgrim as he cries out again, defending himself desperately with his back now hard up against the over-spilled cart. His position appears most dire...

I suspect it won't much matter to Dieter, but these things are approximately the size and bulk of a Grizzly Bear... would you go poke one of those with a sword?

Mads turns and looks behind to any of the other stragglers. He yells "Grab Sigmund and drag his carcass with you--worm food he isn't!"

Yanking himself back, he sees Dieter charge the beasts. He cries "Olaf, loose those arrows!" and charges after Dieter.

Actually, Dieter doesn't charge the beasts.

He uses his ring of jumping and leaps over them, so that he can be behind the one attacking his friend (and incidentally use its own bulk to shield himself from his comrades' arrows...)

When Andaros hears Mads order, and then the horrible sound coming out of the mule, he goes back to fetch the corpse right away.

"Hey, brother, help me with this!" says to Victor.
