The strange smell is near impossible to identify, being not quite like anything else... however, as the company proceeds past this latest passage way, the scent become quite plain. It has a bleach-like tang underlying an almost sweet over-tone.
Pelenwin, Gustave, and then the others now begin to notice that the passage way and walls are almost entirely free of dust and grime. How that could be possible is another mystery to add to the heap... but they push on.
Ahead, Pelenwin now spots yet another passage way branching away form the curved way he is following. This one to the right...
Meanwhile, a dozen or so paces further back, Highbough notices that the walls are not as entirely clean as they do appear. In fact they are coated in a thin, clear film of... something?

"I am surprised to hear myself say this", says Gustave to noone in particular, "but this place is uncomfortably clean."
"Perhaps we should retour to that door a ways back and explore an alternative route?"

"I have a bad feeling about this," mutters Highbough. "Something sticky has used this passageway recently..."

Dieter looks up at the ceiling. Is it clean also? And is it slightly filmed as well?
Because that would bode ill for us.

"We must already be close to the ravine floor after that descent", notes Gustave, pointing a thumb back the way they have come, "and there is breeze coming from somewhere."

"I say we press on. If we find naut of promise in the next few moments, let us return back the way we came. But first, let us go back to that door we passed and depart this ill boding slime" he finishes, looking over the wall closely with lantern held high.

The stuff is neither sticky, nor slimy. If anything, it is like an incredibly fine coating of super-brittle silk. The merest touch of a dagger point snaps the stuff of like dried paint that splinters into a tiny tiny fragments.
