Hearing nothing, he opens onto a 20' square room. This room is painted in a zebra pattern. There is a hat with brightly coloured feathers sticking from it on a shelf by the opposite entrance

Maloof raises an eyebrow. Surely an odd room, but surely a jaunty hat! Maloof is determined to have it! He will search for traps, and if nothing is found he will then proceed into the room following the left wall and attempting to step only on the white stripes if possible. If he hasn't been transformed into a zebra by this point in time, he will continue onwards until he reaches the shelf, where he will search again for traps. If nothing is found at this time, he will grab the hat (he will first attempt to climb the wall if the hat is too high for him to reach).

Any body else doing anything of note while Maloof approaches the hat?

As a former ringbearer, Franklin intuitively understands the situation. He sees the door swing open and assumes Maloof has entered the room to investigate. He holds position at the door and does not enter the room.
Balbo and Drogo are peeking around the corner of the L intersection, keeping watch for any more bird men.

Maloof successfully retrieves the hat

Maloof places the hat upon his head.
Assuming he is still un-polymorphed, he will listen at the eastern door and if nothing is heard he will carefully open the door. If no immediate threats are spotted, he will remove his ring of invisibility and wave the party forward.

Aldbane watches the floating hat with amusement, then he and Bannon move into the room once Maloof gives the all-clear.

Sorry, I thought he had already opened the eastern door, to the hat room
By the way, when he puts the hat on his head, he hears the soft sound of a distant flute

Yes, Maloof is definitely inside the hat room. But I thought there was another exit on the eastern wall of the hat room?

(Emphasis mine)
Perhaps you meant to type "on a shelf opposite the entrance". I guess there aren't any other exits from the hat room in that case?

Maloof will pause to attempt to locate the direction from which the flute sound is coming. He'll try moving back out into the corridor to determine if the sound gets louder or more faint.
