"Sod this," Mondes whispers.

Desmond nods in agreement. Once a rope gets dropped down the opening, Desmond/Mondes will stow his shield on his back, sheath his sword, and tie the rope about his waist. Torch in hand, he'll tug on the rope and chance a quick shout of, "Pull me up!"

Once Dorgan hears Desmond's cry, he'll start pregnant doging and moaning about "make up yer mind, or minds, or what have ya" and forget about climbing down. He'll start pulling Des back up.

Dieter will help haul the two-headed one back up.

As he does, he gets a good look at the rope.

"You really used a square knot on this?" he asks. "Don't you know that could slip under any kind of load?" He shakes his head. "Should have used a sheet bend."

Highbough looks relieved the situation is resolved without his intervention. He scowls thinking of the sorcery and leechcraft he has witnessed this day.

Dorgan says, "Wait until Des gets back up here, and I'll pull out the Marrowstone and have a closer look at the shadows down there..."

The rope is eventually tied and lowered, and a bruised but mostly intact two-headed halfling is hauled, dangling, up from the lower vault. Desmond/Mondes rises through some 20ft of void, then through a 5ft or so of rocky well shaft before passing through a wide, squarish trap door to attain the base of the stair once more. The hole through which he plummeted is about 6ft wide and occupies the complete width of the passage that starts at the foot of the stair.

The steep ramp (the collapsed stair) leads up toward his fellows. Looking the other way (at the same time), Mondes immediately spots a tall lever adjacent to the wall just beyond the open trapdoor. Beyond that the passage continues straight ahead some 30 or 40ft or so to a stout, shut, iron door that must have been forced into the rock by Gods.

Meanwhile, up top... {1d6}...

"Hold!" Desmond calls up, "There's a lever here, I think it's for the stairs... or maybe the pit."

Assuming he is given some slack, he'll maneuver to the side of the hole and make his way to the lever. Once there, he'll manipulate the lever (up if it is down, down if it is up) and see what happens.

"Indeed," Ulric says to Torben as they keep watch. "These would indeed take time to construct. But what I wonder is how much of it is from the infiltrators and how much was already here. I know little of this Sisterhood or their practices."

Ulric hears a call from the chambers behind him.

"It seems that they found something."
