Wen would smile at the fellow and act friendly while thinking to himself -- who is this human and when did he last bath? Is he trying to steal from me?

Out loud Wen would say "Ah I see a winning money would be almost as fun as fighting for you? Yes, haha, very well then, I have very little silver but I'll bet you 5 silver coins that the Ogre Slayer will best Sir Eberhart. Is that the sort of fun you wish?"

Wen would still keep an eye on the best escape route and his hand on a his scrollcase, just in case he needs to use it.

Wen would continue to smile and say "well then I hope you enjoy the match. Now if you'll excuse me I've other things to think about just now."

With that Wen move away from the crowd and find a safe looking spot to sit down.

"Let's see if you're one, shall we?" he grins, and slams down his visor!

What to say or do, Dieter?
"Yes, let's," Dieter says with a short bow. And then he immediately attacks.

And with a sudden flurry the duel is begun!

(The ref takes a moment to roll up Eberhardt's game stats. I will assume that Dieter uses sword and shield in his usual fashion...)

(Initiative is rolled 1d6; Dieter=4+1, The Boar=4) Dieter immediately gets the jump on his opponent (perhaps The Boar's reflexes are dulled by overindulgence?) (2d20=14,8 @+5=19,13 vs AC 4=1 hit, 1d6=3 damage) and delivers a smarting series of blows, but The Boar responds with deadly vim, his battleaxe wielded in both hands (3d20=14,12,18 @+5=19,17,23 vs AC 2=2 hits, 2d6=2,5=7 damage).

The gathered crowd "Ooh!" and "Aah!" appropriately, and wince at the savage clangs and blows as they occur.

"That were quick," encourages The Boar with enthusiasm, as the two huge Men circle one another warily, prodding one another's defenses with feints, preparing for the next move...

Dieter (MV 12", AC 2/5 (chainmail, dex, shield, helm), HD 4+4, hp 11/18, sword & shield)

(Coffee, now would be an opportune moment to observe the minutia of the combat mechanics At a minimum, keep in mind the following options:

a) you can sacrifice your shield to ablate up to 10 hit points, e.g. the 7 you just took (this will be automatic if a blow would otherwise slay you),
b) you can fight defensively, improving AC by 2 for each attack (up to your two attacks total) that you don't make,
c) you can use your sword two-handed, adding +1 to your attack rolls (which might be useful, especially after you lose your shield) ).

What now?

Continue the attack with sword and shield for now. (But I'll keep an eye on the other options, should things go south...)
