Pelenwin clambers down the trestle-work and onto the second ledge... another 5ft wide footing overlooking a dangerously wide drop into utter blackness. Despite the narrow confine, he pulls out his pole-axe and searches for enemy... but there are none here.

At the far end of his ledge, it appears, there might be more of the same timber trestle work that could be scaled by the fearless. By this means alone, or else by jumping, he could descend to the third 5ft wide ledge -- the very limit of Gustave's lantern light.

Apologies all, it is Gustave who has the lantern, not Dieter. I have correctly my previous three or four incorrect posts.

Gustave makes his way cautiously down to the second ledge so that Pelenwin can shoulder his axe and clamber down onto the third.

The other company members follow onto the top ledge.

From where Pelenwin now stands -- about two dozen feet below and directly opposite most of his fellows -- he spies an open door arch beneth their feet.

Perhaps there might be more such entries into this strange chamber, for the ledges continue to circle the vacant shaft for as far down into darkness as the light does carry...
