Guntram, Gustave, Josiane, Dorgan & Highbough; The Ante-Chamber

Josiane and Dorgan maintain their vigil grimly as Guntram stands stoically holding the sputtering torch aloft, Gustave mutters about pastry and swishes his sabre about in the dark, and Highbough conducts his search, bent double over his lantern...

The eerie, chill air moves uncomfortably to accommodate the living; shadows jaunt unnaturally over the neer-do-good faces of the stone graven knights...

Highbough eventually straightens his back, having concluded that the Dwarf may be right about the stone.

Was that a muffled thump from somewhere off in the dark?

"Still, no harm in maintaining ones stamina while we wait is there?", he adds with a grin, pulling some less-appealing-than-at-lunchtime pastries from his pack and popping a crumbling remnant into his mouth.

"Slightly crushed, to be sure - but palatable", he surmises, offering them around to Josiane and Dorgan.
"Thank you, Lord Gustave. Perhaps later?" whispers Josiane, maintaining a firm grip on sword and shield and eyeing the shadows nervously.

At the sudden thump she starts abruptly.

"What was that?"

Dieter leads boldly on, Olaf comes after, then Ulric with his lantern to illuminate the way. The Halflings dally a moment longer among the growing shadows in the first vault, and Pelenwin seems to have the rearward guard.

The far passage is lit now, as Ulric comes up behind Olaf and Dieter, and it is another in-leaning, narrow affair where a tall man might hunch his shoulders to protect his noggin.

Dieter does just so, and edges his way down the chilly, stone passage. His coat of steel rings gives a shunk with each step, his breath all but frosting before him in the near dark, as his own shadow plays out large ahead of him in the passage. The tiny orange flame of Ulric's lantern seems far off behind him indeed as he bravely pushes ahead...

The passage is narrow enough, but is further cramped by lines of upright stone sarcophagi that seem half buried into the stone work along it length. The bass relief carvings of fell knights upon them can just be discerned among the writhing shadows that pitch and yaw with the swing of the lantern.

Now Dieter sees another dark vault looming before him... the open door arch is only a half dozen paces ahead now, partially veiled by a loose curtain of cobwebs... beyond he can scarcely make out... a bulky figure?

Dieter stops.

Does this bulky form make any movement at all? It could be anything, not necessarily hostile.

If it moves toward him at all, he will defend himself.

If it doesn't, he will visually scan the cobwebs before proceeding. Spiders can be nasty.
