"A moment, gentlemen", says Gustave, one finger raised and looking as though some minor epiphany has birthed itself in his mind.
He strides off towards the opposite gate, eyeing off the scaffolding-like manifestation as a bird might an insect.

"yes...", he mutters, "just maybe..."

Maybe indeed... the scaffolding is trussed up like a great caterpillar frame of wood -- two main limbs each 15ft tall, bowed up into a central arch. The top of it protruds slightly above the gate arch wall itself. There appear to be various lengths of rusty chain binding it all in place, holding it fast against the gate house's rear arch...

"Hey Gustave, let me come down and investigate this scaffolding with you, for I remember one of the Saxxon men say there was a special bridge they made to get across to the other keep, but I paid it me kneed at the time", says Wibert. "I for one do not desire to become a hobgoblins pin cushion full of bolts, I'm for existing and returning an other day to win the day", continues Wibert and disappears down the stairs to get below to the court yard to investigate.

Pelenwin frowns in concentration as he flicks through the pages of dense text, in search of sage advice...
On the way as Wibert passes Pelenwin and he has a thought. "Hey Pelenwin I had a thought, it must be from your God for it's not mine. It goes like this ... It is wiser sometimes to exit a bad situation so you can come back when the time is right to win out for righteousness, then loose out and waste your life", says Wibert with the most serious face yet. "That was good I should write that down", finishes Wibert and continues on his way to Gustave.

Because Dieter has an idea...
Olaf moves over and sits on the inner edge of the battlements where he can keep an eye on the hobgoblins outside, but also see and talk with the rest of the party below.

"So, who has ideas?" he asks, "Ideas that get us out of here with as much of our riches as possible and doesn't involve us getting killed?"

"Looks like Gustave has an idea." Olaf says from his perch on the battlements.

Reading from the The Innocent Opus, Pelenwin looks to Wibert, "Perhaps you are right, my friend. What more can we do if stucken down by these demons." He pauses a moment. "Perhaps we should toss what treasure cannot be secured down into the ravine, wait till they go to retrieve it, ambush the buggers with bow and arrow, and take back what's ours."

Ulric makes his way back to the kitchen to start sorting out the coins.

"Ulric, scatter the copper coins around, some here, some there, make them move around to pick it up." Olaf calls down, "The longer the buggers work to gather it, the longer it will be before they pursue us in earnest."

"You mean," Dieter grumbles under his breath, still watching the hobboes, "that I slipped and schlepped half of last night for bloody copper?"
