Michele and Padrig -- and anyone else who fires into the melee -- knows that it is a risky proposition.

(Odd numbered attack rolls are assigned to random targets. Whether attacks gone stray hit or miss depends on the original attack roll and the AC of the randomly assigned target. So 19 and 17 are especially dangerous rolls to roll...)

To keep things safer, Padrig will move around the creature say upto 90 degrees with oil, torch, arrows and bow in hand so that the others are not in the line of site and let loose the arrows.

Michele follows Padrig's lead. He maneuvers for a clear shot and will not fire into melee!

Stones aren't helping, so Dieter draws his sword again (stuffing the sling inside his clothing) and maneuvers forward to where he can stab or slice the thing.

Gustave decisively bounds across to his pack and rips his sword out of its scabbard -- the blade gleams a hungry red orange in the brightness of the still burning oil-fire.

Meanwhile, Anwyn (wisdom=6) lets fly another arrow into the melee (1d20=19) but this time her uncanny luck fails and her stray missile strikes Mads in the back for (1dd=2) 2 hit points! "Oops," she titters to herself, and reaches for another arrow...

Mads cannot believe the extent of his ill fortune (nor the agony), and dives desperately into the trees to his right to get out of the fray as all of a sudden Boris, Fix, Caine and Dieter all charge into the contest. The great lumbering swamp thing is now completely surrounded! Initiative is rolled (1d6; Caine=6+1, Fix=6, Flewellen=6, Dieter=4+1, The Enemy=5, Boris=3, Olaf=2+1)

Caine bursts from his cover, whipping out two daggers as he makes to strike from behind (1d20=1), but the howling thing of the swamp is somehow aware of his ruse and makes a raking sweep in his direction, depriving him of any worthwhile opportunity to engage. Fix searches for an opening with feints and thrusts of his short sword (1d20=2) but he is too careful to get near enough. Flewellen (1d20=14) at last makes his mark, punching his dagger into a mass of writhing tendrils and finding hard bark beneath (1dd=1) delivering 1 hit point.

Dieter marches purposefully into the melee, swatting lashing branches aside with sword and shield, and ducking under a weighty limb. He slashes about him, catching lesser tendils and leaves (1d20=4) but despite his seriousness his blade does not meet a more substantial target.

The steaming great heap of moss, vines and branches turns amid the swarm of oncoming attacks, taking little heed of its numerous injuries as it pounds a thundering step toward Fix and Boris but then snaps its torso sharply toward (1d5 (1=Boris, 2=Fix, 3=Olaf, 4=Taines, 5=Flewellen)=4) Taines and lashes back with its long, heavy club of a fist (1d20=10) catching Taines in mid-stride and battering him brutally. The poor Dwarf is smote most terribly as the monster delivers a grotesque (8dd=1,3,4,4,5,5,5,6) 15 hit points of damage that pitches the Dwarf bodily though the air to land in a broken heap. Rue this woeful night! Taines lies slain!

Boris and Olaf's eyes widen at this deplorable adversity, and both Men hew at the inhuman foe with renewed vigour! Boris (1d20=17) immediately lands a stout blow with his mace (2dd=5,4) for 1 hit point, but seems to have little effect. Olaf (1d20=1) is blinded by rage and tears, and cannot but hack at leaf and vine that vanish as shadows beneath his every stroke!

All this while Padrig and Michele have circled around the combat searching for a safe angle of fire, while Victor works at reloading his weapon and Ulric retreats back to the cart where the paniced mule is squeeling and stamping and testing his bridle.

Mads has 1 of 9 hit points remaining
Taines lies slain (-11 hit points).
