For the Druids...

Great, so I have Entangle as Noh's signature spell, and Faerie Fire for Bilfur.

Additionally, you get to memorize one spell on top of that!

The intention of the rule is, you still get the same number of spells per day (1 spell for 1st level PCs) but you can choose from a list of 2 spells (your memorized spell plus your signature spell).

Looking forward, I am trying to avoid a situation, where every 3rd level druid memorizes Cure Light Wounds as their first 2nd level spell. Because that's boring. This way, if nobody gets hurt and the party doesn't need healing, the druid still gets to do something cool.

Play-by-post games are so slow moving. It could be weeks or months of real-world time from the time you memorize your spells to the time you cast them. If this experiment is a success, I could see us possibly moving to full-spontaneous spellcasting. There is an argument that spontaneous casting is better suited to the quirks of the PbP format. I could see it getting out of hand for high-level magic users, but the top-level casters in our world are only 6th level, so not too outrageous.

January 4

Our heroes wake to find their wounds fully healed from the solid night's sleep! It is a cold, sunny morning in Hornpipe. The leftover snow from the New Year's blizzard is dry and powdery (no good for snowballs).

Bilfur has already cast his 1 spell for the day (per our PM discussion).

Noh knows his signature spell Entangle and can memorize 1 more 1st level spell of his choice.

Frederick and Ursa are sitting by the fire. He is showing her pictures from last year's calendar that he just took off the wall. He looks like a kindergarten teacher showing a picture-book to his pupils. As he flips through the pages of the calendar, she does her best to remember the words: "Jack o Lantern. Um, hobbet family eating a turkey. Oh this is a hard one! Jingle-bell sleigh ride. Hungry hobbets."

Frederick's back was to the door and he hadn't noticed our Heroes' grand entrance. He swivels in his chair: "Oh, good morning! I was just helping old what's-her-name get her memory back. She is really making good progress. It is lucky she is so Wise. If I'd been through what she's been through, my brain would be scrambled eggs. Sorry for the food metaphor; I should probably fire up the griddle for breakfast. What is the plan for today? Are you going to take Eppo-bay to the Ungeon-day? I'm not letting you go on an empty stomach."

Dame Simonetta enquires of Bilfur what he has learned about the staff?

OOC: Beppo is probably super keen, but I think we should wait another day to let Bilfur memorise Entangle before we head down.

Kiplyn would tuck into the breakfast fare...."If we need one more day of rest that's fine by me." He would say between mouthfuls. After a long battle at the table he would go and empty and repack his backpack, check and recheck all his equipment and make sure it's in useable condition. He would also restock his Torches and oils and source those wonderfully clever little tools. :)

"Hmm, what to do with another day in this town..." Beppo mused. Knowing the risks now, though, he publicly enquired to the others, "Can anyone give me a tour of all the safe places for hobbets to gather in own? This can't be the only place...?"

bilfur comments, " not sure what this staff is, it is magical. I am going outside after breakfast to test this, want to come with. I will test this staff away from the inn and humans"

January 4 concludes

Kiplyn somehow manages to obtain a set of Thieves Tools.

Bilfur fails to identify the staff. (Maybe he just hasn't been in the right type of situation, where the staff would be useful?)

January 5

Noh has memorized Entangle and ____?

Bilfur has memorized Faerie Fire and ____?

The weather is sunny and warmer (hovering just above freezing). The snow is starting to melt and drip from the rooftops.

Ursa is feeling better, but looking worse: Her cheeks are raw and her lips are cracked from the aftereffects of frostbite. "I lost a toe!" she says cheerfully. She gestures with her bandaged hand, indicating the blackened, shrivelled hobbet-toe. It is sitting in a glass dish on the table and looks like a raisin. Ursa doesn't seem to be in any physical pain.

Is today the day? Into the Dungeon??

Is Bilfur intending to test the staff on January 4th? If so, Dame Simonetta would take a brief break from her study of the runes to accompany him.

If instead it is January 5th, Dame Simonetta will suggest that Bilfur can test the staff in the Dungeon instead.

Bilfur failed to activate the staff (even after devoting 24 hours to the task) and something about his demeanour seems a little "off" today (as @dtspurrier and I discussed by PM).

Does Dame Simonetta have a specific plan for activating the staff, that she thinks will succeed, where Bilfur failed?

(Does Bilfur even let Dame Simonetta try to activate his staff, or does he stop her from handling his "precious"??)
