Turn 14 continues

Kiplyn listens at the cracks, but doesn't hear anything.

The hobbets continue to the north and soon find themselves at the south end of a cavern that stretches out of lantern-light to the north.

The floor is littered with an odd assortment of cast-off and useless adventuring gear: arrows without arrowheads, axe-handles missing the choppy piece, padded gambesons like you would wear under plate armor, belts without buckles, etc.

OOC: Kiplyn's listen check, rolled behind the DM screen, 1d6=?

Kiplyn has his sling loaded and ready. "There is no metal in these piles.."

"That seems ominous," Wilbur says.

"Very ominous." Dame Simonetta agrees. "Our weapons might be useless against whatever did this. Let's head back and try the other direction."

Vote to head back and try the south passage.

Dougal nods in agreement, shuddering at the thought of a creature that can eat METAL.

He does take a moment to sift through the nearby equipment, looking for anything of value that might not have been eaten by the metal-eating horror (in his mind, this creature is well over 10 feet tall and has two rows of teeth, the back row made of rough flattened teeth useful for crushing metal into smaller bits...).

Willie gets out his sling just in case the thing approaches.

"Make it quick, guys, let's get out of here!"

Dougal and Bilfur have a promising feeling, that a thorough search of the room could potentially turn up many items of value. Without even trying very hard, Bilfur finds a turquoise worth 10gp, on the ground next to a buckle-less leather belt. But before the search can begin in earnest...

SURPRISE!!

A funny-looking creature ambushes the party from the south, attacking the rear of the marching order. It looks like some kind of weird armadillo-kittycat-platypus-arthopod hybrid. It sniffs the air hungrily and targets Wilbur with its two whiplike antennae. The odd thing is, there's not a lot of force to the blows; it just seems like it's trying to lightly tap or graze Wilbur on his chainmail hauberk.

Fortunately, Wilbur is able to leap back and dodge the antennae!

Undeterred, the rust monster regroups for another attack. It is fast-moving and seems very hungry.

Surprise wears off. Prepare for Round 1! Please declare your combat intentions?

Party has no chance to surprise due to their lantern.
Rust monster surprises on 5-6, rolls 1d6=5
Random target 1d6=Wilbur

2 attacks: d20 = 6, 1 both miss

If Kiplyn can get his sling shot in without hurting Wilbur he will throw. Otherwise he will keep retreating away from the beast waiting for a clear shot.

Dame Simonetta will also use her sling, trying to keep out of melee with the creature.
