If Wiglaff may borrow someone's spear or quarterstaff (if necessary he'll beckon one of his hired warriors to pass over his weapon), he'll stand outside the cage, and press down on the floor of the cage as hard as he can with the butt of the weapon.

His goal is to see if the floor inside the cage (beyond the gap) has any give, thereby suggesting a trap, a false floor ... or an elevator!

When he presses down, the whole inside seems to bob down a slight bit, like an elevator

"Ah, so this could move us down a level or two, like a dumbwaiter!" Rhod says. "Let's not try it, then. Let's finish up up here first."

"This could be an exceptionally useful find! But yes, let's explore this level a bit more. Head north?"

Suggest we head north, to the intersection, continue north past that. But advance with extra caution. We're presumably approaching the other side of that yellow metal door in the main corridor.
