Mads the Fair

"We could fashion large shields from wooden planks, nullifying some of the power of their crossbows, drive off the wolves with a whistle, and try our luck with a melee before their re-enforcements arrive." Mads proffers quietly. "We're between a rock and a hard place, it seems."

Ulric joins the others on the wall.

"IF Desmond can scatter the wolves and IF we can get close without getting cut down by their crossbows I may be able to put some more to sleep and cut down their numbers. But I cannot guarantee it. It's a risky move. Some of us will die, that is certain. The only question is who."

"Of course, before we charge we would still need to squeeze through the portcullis one by one and assemble before the charge. That would give them a lot of time to get ready."

"Perhaps a parlay is in order? We might be able to bribe them with a few thousand copper. If not the captain, then surely the rank and file."

"Of course we could always pack up the most valuable treasure and head out the back way. That is my recommendation."

From the gate house, the front gate leads toward the hobgoblins.

The back gate opens directly over a 20 yard wide ravine. This is a decent cliff to jump off, if ever there was one. The ravine is roughly 80ft deep!

There is a collapsed stone bridge which once spanned the gap across the ravine to a gatehouse on the other side (the Ogres' keep).

There is also a rickety looking timber contrivance racked up outside the back gate of this gatehouse. It is something of a scaffolding -- presumably a temporary bridge of sorts which is meant to span the gap in the broken stone bridge.

Nobody has thought to examine it closely since arriving...

Pelenwin rests his great axe against the wall in order to extract a thick tome from his pack. The Innocent Opus is wrapped in a sheet of white velvet, still pure despite all its far travels. The white suede covered tome within is pure and crisp, and unblemished by all its perilous journeys.

Pelenwin frowns in concentration as he flicks through the pages of dense text, in search of sage advice...

(Now would be a good opportunity for you to tell me something of the teachings of Seyal, Tombowings )

Half of the company (including Dieter) are inside the front gate.

The other half are above them upon the battlement over the front gate.

It is easy to converse with one another.
