Can we fire from the portcullis? If so, Dieter will get out his sling and fire at the retreating hobgoblins.

By the time
Dieter has squeezed back into the courtyard, the retreating hobgoblins are out of range.
It would have been very difficult to fire a sling through the portcullis gate in any case.

Olaf now has 5 arrows remaining.
Wibert now has 11 arrows and 3 silver arrows in Padrig's quiver, and 4 arrows in the knave's quiver.
"
Let us make every arrow count for now one", says
Wibert.

It seems a stand off has been reached.
Neither the hobgoblins nor the company want to risk crossing the killing zone between the two camps... at least for now.
Those upon the battlements see the hobgoblin Captain ordering (pointing with Olaf's arrow) his troops to dig their position in... the crossbow-men stay on watch, and the wolf-riders continue to prowl a wide perimeter about the front of the keep... out of bow shot.
What now, good people?

Once Desmond is done gathering a few stones to drop down, he stands at the battlements and surveys the situation, trying to decide what to do. Or, at least, what he can do to help.
"Olaf," he begins, after some careful thought, "I don't know what to do about the big green ones on foot, but..." He pats the top of his chest, where his silver whistle is safely tucked inside his tunic. "I can sure try to disrupt those wolf-riders if they make a charge at us."
He smiles at Olaf and then turns back to study the enemy and come up with anything else that might be useful.

"What does it do?" Olaf asks, "Hurts the ears of beasts, or something like that?"
He smiles at Olaf and then turns back to study the enemy and come up with anything else that might be useful.
Olaf also watches the hobgoblins for a bit then says, "I think they are going to try to wait us out, and if that is the case, I think we need to figure out a way to get out of here."

"Well, it chased off those two owl-faced things that ate the dwarf. It's a dog whistle. Should work just as well on the wolves. No idea what it will do to them, of course, but they won't like the sound of it."
Desmond pauses.
"Want me to give it a quick try and see what it does?"
He grins innocently.

KOCH turns to Desmond and says, "Don't ruin the surprise yet Desmond. Wait until it's absolutely necessary."
KOCH turns to Olaf, "I agree, we don't have the supplies to survive a siege."
KOCH to everyone in the vicinity, "Going through the cellar and climbing through the caves is time-consuming and arduous. We wouldn't be able to carry much with us. If that treasure is to be kept, we should probably go through the opposite gate."
