"Thanks!" Olaf says as he continues to carry loads into the building, "Once we get the cart unloaded and I have a minute to dump the water out of my boots, I'd like to see the mechanism."

"If we can lower and raise the gate, I'll feel a little safer in here." he adds to the entire party, "Hey! Do any of you guys know anything about mechanisms and such? If you do, then maybe you need to come along with Desmond and me to check this thing out."

There is also a fireplace at the kitchen end of the mess hall, sharing the same chimney as the kitchen hearth, which could be lit.

Dieter, Victor, Boris, Andaros and Olaf and all soaked to the skin, and plastered in mud past their knees and up to their elbows. They could all do with a rest and a decent hot drink (which, notably, isn't ready and waiting for them).
