Mads the Fair
Mads yells out "Spider! Spider has the hob'--even he doesn't deserve that fate!" He rushes out with his antique cold-iron axe at the ready, aiming to split that spider in twain.

Olaf leaps from his blanket and grasps his sword, "What! What is it?"
The tall lean warrior peers into the darkness and confusion trying to make sense of the scene before him.
Hearing Mads' words, he moves forward to attack the retreating spider.

Mads acts swiftly (initiative 1d6=6!), leaping toward the stair to intercept the monster's retreat, and slashes wildly at the horror as it scuttles toward the stair.
(1d20=14) His axe swing clips the spider's hardened carapace for (2dd=1,3) 3 hit points before it bundles the ashen-faced Boson down into the darkness of the ground floor, below...
Olaf is now on his feet with sword drawn, looking wide-eyed about, as is Anwyn. The remainder of the party are still tangled in bed-rolls and blanket and wondering what all the commotion is about.
It is cold and pitch dark below. Your intentions?

What was that about spiders? Again? Ulric drags himself from his bedroll and fumbles through his gear to get his lantern lit.

"Arrcchh.......thar balck beasty is with us again, probably well feed now!." Taines smirks under a wince of pain. His wound around his belly now aching as the bruising surfaces.
"Aye how well I can fight, but I'm right behind yer" Taines rolls uncomfortably over to his side, and props himself up. Reaching for his leathers, he slowly and painfully dons his armour.

Olaf starts after Mads, but then stops...thinking better of it...and hustles back to where he pulled off his armor and dons it and his helmet before taking sword and shield and following the others.

"Got a piece of him!" breathes Mads haggardly. "Stoke that fire and bring a torch!" he screams as he leaps out into the darkness.

Mads and Anwyn give chase, charging down the narrow stone stair apace, but the loathe spider is not so constrained and scuttles right down the side of the wall, gaining distance and quickly reaching the floor and then vanishing into the inky dunjon. Having traversed half the stair in the same amount of time, Mads has to slow or risk tripping. "Even I cannot see without any light," comments Anwyn over his shoulder on the stair.
Caine and Flewellen jump up, grab their blades and hasten to the top of the stair to descend after Mads and Anwyn, but they too find themselves rushing into a deep darkness.
Meanwhile, Olaf and Taines have been hastily donning their armour, doing up only the essential buckles, while Ulric locates his lantern, checks the oil, then grabs a twig from the little pile of firewood and ignites it in the remains of the campfire. Once he has this stick aflame, he uses it to lights his lantern.
At last Olaf, Taines and Ulric are ready.
