OOC: Is the ceiling in the staircase high enough that Rufus could potentially throw the container of fire water up onto the landing?

Yes, that might be plausible...

Mads the Enlightened
Mads slowly draws his magical light away from the landing, and, with great care and attempted stealth, attempt to ascend the rest of the stairs and gain a visual for what awaits them at the top.

One of the hazards of dungeoneering...
You are in a dark, narrow stone stair leading up to a landing.
Rufus is behind
Mads,
Dugel and
Wendel. The spider webbed passage is behind, and there are (apparently) voices ahead.

"Whassat?" startles one of the voices on the landing...

There is a very long pause, both parties waiting... listening intently.
Eventually Mads hears a voice quietly say:
"Kill the light. Quietly like."
And a moment later there is a small shunk as the shutter of a lantern is shut right down...

Realizing their severe disadvantage on the stair, Mads whisks half of his magical candlelight up and onto the landing. "Ho there! Friend or foe?" he barks. "A giant spider trails us, so speak quickly."
