The Herald advances, mace and shield at the ready. He links up with Gunt and attacks the nearest enemy until all are dead.

This would be to ruin the weapons. ***Update - targeting melee weapons and shields***
Thanks for the tip on the tags. My messageboarding skills are definitely below par...

Karl will get a shot off with his bow (preferably at the leader, but whoever is the best target really) and then draw his sword for melee.
If he can join a line, he will, but not if such movement leaves him open.

Menno will begin firing crossbow bolts into opponents until he either has no safe target or he is forced to melee, at which point he will draw his axe and attempt to join the line. In any event he hopes to keep Faengol from harm as the Elf works his spell.

Does Karl presume Thick-Neck to be the leader?

"Son of a..." curses Boggs. He raises his cudgel and fends off any attackers (i.e. fights defensively).
Resisting the urge to go all Highbough 2.0...

"Ah, men..." sighs Gerthrude, and casts The Amiable Collouquy on the nearest of the crossbowmen.

Yes, he looks like the leader to me. (And whether he is or not, I don't like him...)

Completely unused to fighting as part of a group (actually, unused to fighting at all), Wetzel screams inarticulately and throws his spear at Thick-Neck's thick neck.
Next, he draws his dagger and goes for the south-most hobgoblin, leaping at the beast with abandon and trying to get in close as possible, where his dagger can be an advantage. He fights with a peculiar ferocity, like a small, vicious animal.
If he survives this first confrontation, he seems to regain some sense of self-preservation. He attempts to claim his opponent's weapon and shield, dropping his dagger if necessary, and moves carefully to join the defensive line. From then on he fights very cautiously, crouched behind the shield and attempting to parry incoming blows.

I now have orders from everyone excepting Fendrel the Fighter (Todd), so I will assume Fendrel assists with the party line (see below).
As I understand it (in quick summary form):
Wetzel, Karl, Dopey, Menno, and Leudigar will discharge missiles, while Faengol and Gerthrude invoke their respective sorceries.
Meanwhile Gunt, Herald and Fendrel intend to form up a line, which Karl and Menno intend to join, and which Faengol and (presumably?) Gerthrude intend to shelter behind. Wetzel, Alfwin, and Leudigar will dive into the melee initially, while Boggs (and Dopey--rather non-committal orders?) will defend themselves.
From there I have instructions from Wetzel, Alfwin, and Faengol to consider fleeing, and from The Herald of Man to fight to the end.
Unless I hear tell otherwise shortly, it shall be so!
