Ulric mutters to himself as he inspects what he has exposed of the pattern.
"There is definitely some kind of arcane trap here," he says. "I cannot determine exactly how it works; it may take more time than we have to do so. For now, just avoid stepping on the patterns."
Ulric carefully makes his way toward the open passage that Dieter was walking toward ('east'), clearing a path free of the runes.
"This place is clearly evil," Ulric says as he works. "I think we can be certain now that this fortress was not the work of men."
OOC: Here is what Mads was carrying:
Mads(Man F1, AC4/5, HD 1+4, hp 9/9, Load 11/11)
Clothing, Backpack (1), Bedroll (1), Purse {6cp}, Waterskin {2 quarts} (1), Victuals {2 days}, Chainmail (4), Helm (1), Shortbow (1), Quiver (1), Arrows {24}, Cold Iron Axe (1), Tinderbox, Chalk, Knave's dagger
I'd say the food, water, and axe are all we really need.

If it wouldn't increase their encumbrance any, dividing the arrows among those with bows would also be smart, as I think they're mostly pretty low.

Boris added the remnants of Mads' victuals to his pack.
Wibert takes the fallen warrior's meagre purse, and also 12 of his arrows -- thus filling his quiver to capacity.
Olaf could do with the other 12 arrows, but alas he is missing, so Koch picks up Mads' quiver, since nobody else can carry it unencumbered.
Demond picks up Mads' antique cold-iron axe, dropping his sword. It is a weighty thing, but it feels cool and re-assuring in the Halfling's steady grasp.

Meanwhile Ulric and Highbough continue to sweep away the ash while the wounded seek rest and refreshment.

Some minutes later, the pair have cleared much of the ash from the pattern on the "eastern" portion of the floor. There can be little doubt that it is a pentacle of some sort, and Highbough recognises the runes as some dialect of the Infernal tongue.
Both are convinced that the markings comprise a spell of summoning, though how it should be worked they cannot yet fathom. Perhaps if they were to scrawl a copy of these runes they might be able to divine their meaning at a later time..?

While Ulric and Highbough are absorbed with this, Desmond, Pelenwin, Dieter and Gustave all wash and strap their wounds, take a refreshing drink and right their battered belts and armour.

Fate seems to turn a blind eye to the company's intrusion, for no further disturbance cometh during this time.

Can Highbough heal his missing hit point too if he rests with Desmond? Can he jot down the infernal runes while he rests? He likes the idea of summoning exploding fire-men to fight against the hobgoblin army!
