will Dieter sacrifice his shield?
Yes, he definitely will.
After the slaying this latest hobgoblin,
Dieter will at last use the power of his ring to leap to safety.
But he laughs as he does so. Loudly.

As KOCH reaches the porticullis, he notices the crossbow fire of the hobgoblins and says, "d**n it all, and just as I thought I'd be out of this gatehouse."
He gathers whatever arrows he can from the cart and brings them back to the top of the battlements. Once there, he will reload his sling.

OOC: If Koch brings some arrows up, Olaf will take some of them, if not, he'll head back down to the courtyard where he can find arrows. If he can find some he'll return to the battlements to provide fire if the hobgoblins move closer. If he can't find more arrows, he'll remain in the courtyard where his sword might come into play.

"Dont forget our friends down below", he warns, "Now would be a superb time for an ambush from the rear."

Wibert at Olaf.
Wibert will also count how many of them there is out there.

"Ha!" Olaf laughs, "Great plan if they are shooting arrows, and not bolts. It looks like they have crossbows, so bolts, and I can't use them with my bow."
