He safely opens the chest, to reveal a pile of gold coins, at leas a thousand of them

After carefully stirring amongst the coins with his mace, if nothing unusual is located Maloof will load up on the loot and call for his companions to do the same.

1000gp might be enough to kick Aldbane up a level! Delve further? or return to the surface & cash in?

I think we're still doing quite well on resources (spells, hitpoints)? If so, I'd vote for continuing to explore this area near the elevator. But I'm OK with it if everyone votes to head up now.

Actually that's right, I noticed Aldbane does not get the big bump to his spells until 6th level. So I'd be fine waiting and continuing to explore here also.
