Beppo didn't know why he also had to say it, but just in case it was important he repeated the words with the same emphasis: "You DO NOT talk about ADVENTURE CLUB." He wondered who he was saying it to...

Bilfur and Dame Simonetta (group B) are keeping watch down the Chasm. This is what they see:

Due to their torch light at the top, and lantern on a string, the two Hobbets have a good view of everything happening down below them. 50' down, the dead body of the Spider-Goat is suspended motionless in its web, until something very strange happens. A blob of liquid, inky blackness oozes up out of the depths. It slithers toward the Spider-Goat corpse and begins to bubble and flow around it like tar. There is a hungry slurping noise, and in a few minutes, the carcass will be completely engulfed!

DM's note: This is an out-of-bounds monster from beyond the Dungeon. This encounter is not "balanced" with other Dungeon Level 1 monsters! Consider your options carefully before acting.

OOC: Please see the Out of Character thread for an important rules clarification: https://forum.immersiveink.com/viewtopi ... 608#p34608

In a nutshell, after a few years of playtesting, I've decided I like the Delving Deeper v4 combat system better (at least in the context of Play-by-Post games) so we're rolling back from v5.

The biggest difference you will notice, is fewer attack rolls (but higher probability to-hit).

I think this will give the combat more of a "D&D" and less of a "Chainmail" feel.

Kiplyn looks around the cave a bit baffled. "I didn't know Ursa has a cave, whoever this belongs to seems odd to live next to the spider-goat. Is there another way out?"

Dame Simonetta watches the... creature?... with a combination of emotions, but mainly disgust and fear. If the lantern is anywhere close to it, she will raise it up so that's it is not within its reach.

"DOUGAL! KIPLYN!" she shouts out into the void. "DO NOT COME BACK THIS WAY! DO NOT COME BACK!"

There is a risk she will attract the thing with her calling, but she must warn them.

Hey, you! I'm not talking to the Hobbets, I'm talking to YOU, gentle reader, drinking your coffee and staring at your screen. I invite you to join in a thought experiment:
acodispo spits his coffee all over his screen and shivers with terror.

Meanwhile, Willie continues on his trek through the secret doors, blissfully unaware...

Can we hear the Dame screaming?

OOC: Good thinking, @rredmond. Let's give everybody a Listen check to hear Dame Simonetta's warning. A reminder that Hobbets have improved listen (success on 5-6) as a racial ability in this system.

A Team: Kiplyn succeeds with a 6 and hears the Dame, loud and clear.

C Team (at -1 penalty because they are behind closed doors): Beppo and Carc both roll 6's and succeed. Of note, even though there is a deep chasm in this hallway, Dame Simonetta's voice is not echoing up from below; her voice can only be heard muffled through the doors. So to answer your question: Noh doesn't hear, but his bird alerts him (and Beppo can fill the others in on what he heard).

Black Pudding: fails with a roll of 4. Evil DM will leave it to the players' imagination, the best explanation for the failed Listen check: 1) it doesn't have ears, 2) it is too focused on its meal, 3) it is desensitized to the sound of screaming hobbets, 4) all of the above.

Dougal finds no traps (check rolled in secret but it was a 5) and opens the chest. It contains the following items:

Water jug, tea kettle, cannister of tea leaves, pot of honey, dish towels, castile soap, scrub brush, flyswatter.
