Dougal looks at the results of the silver coin toss and shrugs, "Looks like it's the western passage."
Seems obvious to me that Heads would be the western passage and Tails would be the southron passage...

Yes, that's what I was thinking. Heads = West

The party moves single-file through the western tunnel, finding themselves in a mined-out area behind the rubble pile (#24). The cautious adventurers shine their lanterns into every nook and cranny, but find no monsters or additional treasure (apart from the silver).

There are a few silver nuggets scattered loose on the ground, but most of the silver is concentrated in the debris-choked passage. Our heroes could recover several hundred silver pieces in value, if they sifted through the rubble.

Most interestingly, there is a pair of boots sticking out from under the loose rocks! The boot soles are pointing west, into area 24.

Dame Simonetta will use the flat of her sword to attempt to pry the boots out. If she discovers a body attached to them, she'll she if she can dig it out by removing rocks (using her hands).

Kiplyn stays on the alert while this is going on looking in all directions, but not at once of course :D .

Willie lights his lantern (if it hasn't been lit already) and moves in a few feet behind Dame Simonetta. He takes a look at the ceiling and the rocks above. Then he keeps watch while Dame S works. He doesn't watch what she's doing, but watches the rocks behind the rocks she's working on. He gets ready to leap in and pull her back if he sees anything shifting.

If Dame Simonetta starts digging, Wilbur will come over and help her dig.

Our heroes' vigilance pays off!

Dame Simonetta determines that the boots are, indeed, attached to feet, and that the feet are attached to a body, buried under the rubble.

But before she and Wilbur can start digging, Willie and Kiplyn notice something frightening and unusual!

There is an object half-buried in the rubble, that at first glance appeared to be an old wooden support beam, rotten and moss-covered. But as soon as the Hobbets touch the boots, disturbing the rubble, the "log" comes to life and begins to wiggle. It shifts position, causing ripples in the layer of stones and gravel that cover it. The impression is of a beast, like a shark or alligator, lurking just beneath the surface of the water!

The living log creature fails to ambush our Hobbets!
Surprise check 1d6 = 5, our heroes are not surprised.

Initiative will be rolled... please state your combat intentions!

Dame Simonetta steps back to rejoin her fellow hobbets and draws her second sword. She's ready to attack, if the thing approaches within melee range.

"Yikes! Get back!" shouts Willie when he sees the thing.

He instinctively takes a few steps back and raises his hammer.

He, too, will engage the "log" in melee, but only if it approaches the party with what he judges to be hostile intent -- any sign of snapping teeth, or waving tentacles, or even just dangerous rolling, will be treated as such.
