While we're talking clerics, are you guys willing to give me comments/notes on the pantheon I'm workingshopping for my next campaign? The setting would be somewhat similar to Hobbet Heroes (Lovecraftian New England) but unlike Hobbet Heroes, the Cleric class does exist. The first three religions are from Lovecraft; the fourth is my take on the traditional D&D cleric.
(@scottenkainen I took some inspiration for Church of the Cross from your cleric Meno in the odd74 game. Thanks!)
The dominant religions in the campaign would be:
Esoteric Order of Dagon. Worshippers of Father Dagon and Mother Hydra. The dominant religion in coastal towns like Innsmouth.
Church of Starry Wisdom. Worshippers of the Haunter in the Dark (spoiler: an aspect of Nyarlathotep) and the Shining Trapezohedron. Seekers of knowledge.
Brotherhood of the Yellow Sign. Worshippers of the King in Yellow (spoiler: an aspect of he-shall-not-be-named). Seekers of immortality.
Church of the Cross. The major Lawful religion. Its clerics have 3 core responsibilities:
1. Once a week, gather the faithful to the Cross, and work together to make the community stronger.
2. Smite the servants of Chaos (undead, demons, lycanthropes, etc.).
3. Bury the dead with the appropriate ceremonies (so they don't rise as undead) and mark their gravesite with a cross.
(Basically, my thought was that the Church of the Cross became the dominant religion, because they alone know the secret of proper burial, to prevent your loved ones rising as zombies! This goes back to the original D&D concept of the Cleric class as undead hunters.)
