Missed it by that much :x
And that was including Kip's dexterity bonus, and the +2 flanking bonus from Willie's diversion. Tough break; the dice gods were cruel this round!

Re: The Fifth Adventure

Willie continues to fight as best he can, which consists mainly of spasmodically wiggling his still-free feet and shaking his head about. His thoughts turn to his seemingly-inevitable fate, and he decides there are better ways to go, yes, but also worse ones. He hopes he will be remembered long in the annals of Adventure Club.

It is all he can do to squeeze a breath into his crushed torso, and gasp out: "Avenge me!"

Seeing Willie in trouble, Dougal draws his sword and main gauche and rushes in, swinging at the creatures limbs (literally), hoping to hack them off and save his friend.

OOC: I am so frightened to touch the dice, worried for Willie! On paper a 4' log might not seem like the scariest opponent. But its vines reach 6', so when it spreads them, it has a 12' span. Now imagine that from the perspective of a little Hobbet. In human scale, that would be an 8' tall tree trunk with a 24' vine-span!

Re: The Fifth Adventure

Kampfult Battle Round 2

Dougal engages with the sinewy mugger's limbs. He feels like he gets a pretty good swing, but to his surprise, the creature ignores the direct hit and seems completely unharmed. The sensation is like chopping green wood with a dull axe. The creature releases 4 of the vines holding Willie and targets Dougal instead! The kampfult is holding Willie with 1 vine, playing keepaway from the party, and threatens to attack Dougal with 5 vines on the creature's turn.

Wilbur completely whiffs his attacks.

Dame Simonetta hacks away with all her strength, but fails to damage the trunk.

Kiplyn fights with the strength of two men! He stabs his dagger into the trunk not once but twice! The sinewy mugger survives the first stab wound, but succumbs to the savage second wound.

Timberrrrrrr!! As if in slow motion, the log-monster topples over to the ground. Its vines go limp and Willie is unceremoniously dropped on his bottom. He is a little worse for wear, but happy to be alive!
The +2 flanking bonus no longer applies.

Dougal 16, 12 hits the vines for 5hp but the creature is unaffected!
Dougal gets the creature's attention. It releases 0-5=4 vines from Willie to attack Dougal.

Dame Simonetta 3, 8 miss
Wilbur 2, 9 miss
Kiplyn 15, 19 hit twice for 5+3=8hp killing the kampfult!
Good thing Kip levelled up and gets the extra attack.

Willie is at 4/9 hit points.

Kiplyn jumps back after delivering his fatal blows, he seems almost shocked at his actions and the outcome. In a shaky voice he says "Willie?"

Re: The Fifth Adventure

Scattered throughout the area are 600sp value raw nuggets, weighing 30lbs, enough to fill 1 large sack.

Dame Simonetta is intrigued by the mysterious corpse. First of all, this one is truly dead (for a change of pace), not reanimated with undead energy! Second, it is totally skeletalized and appears to be quite ancient. Third, she's not convinced it's a Hobbet!

The skeleton is substantially smaller than a human's. That is to say, in life this person would have been dwarfed in stature by an adult human. But they would have stood a bit taller than most Hobbets, and stockier of frame than even a big guy like Tet.

The skeleton's armor is nothing like Hobbet-style armor: It is made from bronze plates riveted to leather. The leather has mostly rotted away, leaving little dangling bronze bits. The suit consists of helmet, breastplate, and greaves. The helmet is caved in and the skull is smashed, suggesting the cause of death.

Dame Simonetta rolls the skeleton over to get a better look at its front. The bone structure of the skull is suggestive of a wide, strong, rugged face. Despite the corpse's advanced decay, the facial hair is fully intact. The waist-length beard is intricately braided and tied with leather ribbons. The beard is in striking contrast to the feminine curves of the armor. Never has Simonetta met a dame who would be capable of filling out this breastplate! The druid Ursa, for example, is a curvy woman, gives good hugs, but she would look like a waif next to whatever bearded mystery warrior this armor was designed for.

The skeleton isn't carrying a shield, or any weapons, and if they had a backpack, it's long gone. But Dame Simonetta does find a small pouch on the skeleton's belt, and in the pouch, 2 glass potion vials (identical in appearance).

Peeking out from under the beard is a steel owl medallion. The owl's wings are outstretched, and its eyes are piercing and intense. The medallion is engraved with unfamiliar runes. The metal is untarnished and the craftsmanship is superior. The medallion is probably worth 400gp just as a jewelry item, notwithstanding the runes.

OOC: As always, you may attempt a Mythos check to understand the runes. I'll keep prompting you so long as you are on the 1st dungeon level. Once you get to the 2nd level and below, no more hints from the DM!

The party thoroughly searches through the rubble, but nothing else of value is found.

Re: The Fifth Adventure

OOC: Apologies to acodispo! My character spreadsheet was slightly out of sync with my notes. I think Willie should actually have 5/10 hit points (not 4/9) because he got +1 hit point when he leveled up to a 2nd level thief after the last Adventure.
