The Herald shrugs, tightens his grip on his mace and shield, and follows Zax down the corridor.

Pss't! Go left at the first intersection!, he hisses quietly at Zax.

"Mad -- mad folk," Wetzel is muttering, as he shoulders his pack and straps on his shield. But he looks a bit excited as he follows Zax and The Herald down the corridor.

Akbar, too, follows.

Karl will bring up the rear.

Zax marches out into the main thoroughfare, ice pick in hand and an intent in his mind. He is followed by a column of armed and armoured Men, moving none too subtly.

As Zax approach the arch and door, a skinny goblin steps out of the arch--barely 10ft in front of him--encumbered by an armload bundle of torches. It is muttering some gibberish to itself, and hasn't seen Zax coming over the high load of faggots.

The ref dices for surprise:

Will Zax, then the Goblin, be surprised? 2 # d6 → [3, 6] so Zax is not surprised, the goblin is surprised.

The players now have a free surprise segment in which to take one action; only Zax is in a position to attack.

The Herald says, hopefully, Maybe don't kill this one? Yet...

Akbar glances at The Herald with one eyeball while staring down his crossbow with the other and picturing an imaginary red dot in the middle of the goblin's face.

Wetzel moves forward to melee range -- he will not start a fight, but will join one to finish it as quickly as possible, if someone else starts it.

He is worried about the figures guarding the sunlit end of the passage and tries to keep an eye in that direction.
