Re: (076) Off the Beaten Track

That sounds like what we'll, for lack of a better term, call the plan.

If possible I'd amend Boggs' intentions to state that, if he observes others in the party fleeing or retreating, he will gladly join them. But he is not going to abandon EVERYONE highbough-style. ;)

Ditto this for Wetzel. :D

After a (round?) or two of fighting "freestyle" he'll attempt to join the defensive line, but won't retreat unless there's a general rout.

Sound right to me! Hoping the initial round goes well and we can push them back enough for the Fighters to control that battle. Because I'm not a fighter :o

Leudigar throws his spear, shouting, "These are the bastards who defile our lands!"
Desmond would seriously consider a plan that involved fleeing to the secret stairway if things didn't look good. But this is Leudigar. In his mind, anyone associated with the goblins is partially responsible for destroying his home and killing his family.

Re: (076) Off the Beaten Track

There is a furious exchange of missiles. Alas! Gerthrude is pierced by a quarrel through the neck and falls before she ever utters her magic spell, while two hobgoblins and one crossbowman are shot dead, and Thick-Neck takes a wound to slay any Man. Faengol's spell is hurried but still manages to splinter the shafts of four hobgoblins axes the moment before their charge crashes home.

As the melee begins four of six remaining hobgoblins find themselves sorcerously disarmed; one is slain and two more injured in impact, while Wendrel and Menno take hurts in return. Although over one-third of the mercenary hobgoblins have fallen, their morale is fanatic and they need not check again.

Within moments, the Hinterlands Regulators loose a further two hobgoblins in the fighting, but Yurzalg the alpha-hob fights on despite two hits! Three of eight hobgoblins remain, while Dopey takes a hit for the players, but no further casualties are suffered.

In the next round Wetzel takes a telling head hit, and Fendrel takes a second hurt bringing him near his limit. In exchange two more hobgoblins are slain, leaving just the one fierce specimen. Seeing the slaughter, the crossbowmen make to flee, while the three Fightering-Men (two now wounded), pull back for a breather, Thick-Neck's Left-hand Man saying: "Whoa then! By the cunning sorcery of hags and dwarfs we are bested! We cede this field to stronger Men!" the last hobgoblin is furious, Thick-Neck only looks grim, but with their second line already fleeing behind them, it is clear the regulators are beaten, and they can only relent. The three Men and last standing hobgoblin await the mercy of the company... to fight to the last, or make terms?
The referee dices to determine whether the non-player characters are in possession of any enchanted objects...

And Then Battle Does Ensue!

SUMMARY OF MISSILE/MAGIC SEGMENT
A. Bother sides dice for initiative: 2 # d6 → [3, 5] so players=3, non-players=5

B. Players begin their spells... (the non-players have none).

C. Non-player missile segment:
Five crossbow shots: 5 # d20+2 → [11, 14, 11, 19, 4]
Who is targetted? 5 # d12 → [1, 6, 1, 9, 8] so:
11 vs Alfwin (AC6) miss, 14 vs Gerthrude (AC9) hit! 11 vs Alfwin (AC6) miss, 19 vs Karl (AC3) hit! 4 vs The Herald (AC3) miss.
Damage rolls 2 # d6 → [6, 2], Gerthrude takes 6 hp (a head hit!), Karl takes 2 hp.
Gerthrude is slain!

D. Player missile segment:
Dopey, Karl, Leudigar, Menno, Wetzel: 5 # d20+2 → [17, 3, 17, 13, 21]
Dopey hits a hobgoblin, Karl misses Thick-Neck, Leudigar hits a crossbowman, Menno @+1 (d16 → 8, so hobgoblin) hits exactly!, Wetzel hits Thick-Neck.
Damage rolls 4 # d6 → [6, 5, 6, 6]. Yow!
Ref rolls hp for two hobgoblins, one crossbowman, and Thick-Neck: 2 # d6 + 1 → [3, 2], 1 # d6 → [1], 1 # 3d6 → [13].
Two hobgoblins, one crossbowman are slain. Thick-Neck takes a 6 hp hit.

E. Magic segment:
Gerthrude is hit, her spell ruined; alas she is slain.
Faengol's spell is invoked: 2d6 + 2 → [4] (a horrible roll!) only 4 hobgoblin axes are ruin'd!

F. Melee segment:
SUMMARY OF FIRST ROUND
FIRST ROUND Non-Players
Six hobgoblins, two fighters, and Thick-Neck meet the players' line.
Four hobgoblins are disarmed, so only two hobgoblins, two fighters, and Thick-Neck attack: 2 # d20 → [11, 16] and 2 # d20 + 1 → [3, 16], and Thick-Neck has the fighting capability of three men: 3 # d20 → [18, 9, 1].
Who is targetted? 7 # d10 → [7, 4, 8, 2, 9, 7, 10] so: 11 vs Gunt (AC3) miss, 16 vs Fendrel (AC3) hit!, 3 vs Leudigar (AC4) miss, 16 vs Boggs @-4 (AC6) miss by 1!, 18 vs Menno (AC5) hit!, 9 vs Gunt (AC3) miss, 1 vs Wetzel (AC6) miss.
Fendrel and Menno are hit: 2 # d6 → [1, 3] Fendrel takes 1 hp, Menno takes 3 hp.

FIRST ROUND Players
Six fighters attack: 6 # d20 + 1 → [7, 16, 7, 10, 18, 4]
Two clerics attack: 2 # d20 → [2, 15]
Who is targetted? (6 hobgoblins, 2 fighters, Thick-Neck) 8 # d9 → [7, 1, 6, 4, 5, 5, 8, 5] so 16 vs hobgoblin hit!, 18 vs hobgoblin hit!, 15 vs hobgoblin hit!
Three hobgoblins are hit: 3 # d6 → [2, 1, 6]
Ref rolls hp for three more hobgoblins: 3 # d6 + 1 → [7, 4, 5], so two are wounded and one slain.

Three of eight hobgoblins have been slain; that's a morale check.

Morale check for hobgoblinses: 2d6 → 12! They ain't runnin'! Despite the daylight these guys really detest all magic-users!
SUMMARY OF SECOND ROUND
SECOND ROUND Non-players
Three hobgoblins loose a round to re-arm themselves with daggers. Four crossbowmen stow their weapons.
Two hobgoblins, two fighters, and Thick-Neck continue to melee the players: 2 # d20 → [7, 7], 2 # d20 + 1 → [9, 3], 3 # d20 → [2, 3, 18]. That's a whole bunch of misses, but who has Thick-Neck targetted with his 18? 1 # d10 → 3, so Dopey (AC7) @-4 hits. Dopey takes d6 → 3 hp damage.

SECOND ROUND Players
Six fighters attack: 6 # d20 + 1 → [16, 19, 13, 2, 15, 20]
Two clerics attack: 2 # d20 → [1, 18]
Who is targetted? (5 hobgoblins, 2 fighters, Thick-Neck) 8 # d8 → [5, 5, 2, 4, 6, 3, 8, 6] so 16, 19, 13, 2 vs hobgoblins, two hits; 15 vs fighter miss; 20 vs hobgoblin, hit; 1 vs Thick-Neck, miss; 18 vs fighter, hit.

So three hits on hobgoblins 3 # d6 → [2, 4, 6], and one hit on a Fighter 1 # d6 → [3].
Ref rolls hp for two more hobgoblins: 2 # d6 + 1 → [4, 3], so two hobgoblins slain! Ref rolls hp for one of the fighters: 1 # d6 + 2 → [5], so he is only injured.
SUMMARY OF THIRD ROUND
THIRD ROUND Non-players
Behind the line, four crossbowmen rearm themselves with daggers.
Three hobgoblins, two fighters, and Thick-Neck continue to melee the players:
3 # d20 → [2, 7, 13], 2 # d20 + 1 → [20, 10], 3 # d20 → [11, 6, 4].
Who is targetted? 8 # d10 → [9, 9, 10, 4, 6, 7, 7, 4].
13 vs Wetzel (AC6) hit, 20 vs Fendrel (AC3) hit, 11 vs Karl (AC3) miss.
2 # d6 → [6, 3], Wetzel takes 6 hp (a head hit!), Fendrel takes 3 hp (4 hp from two hits).

THIRD ROUND Players
Six fighters attack: 6 # d20 + 1 → [5, 2, 2, 10, 20, 18]
Two clerics attack: 2 # d20 → 2 # d20 → [13, 20]
Who is targetted? (4 hobgoblins, 2 fighters, Thick-Neck) 8 # d7 → [7, 4, 6, 4, 2, 6, 3, 1]
5 vs Thick-Neck, miss; 2, 2, 10, three misses; 20 vs hobgoblin, hit; 18 vs fighter, hit; 13, 20 vs hobgoblins, miss and hit. So two hits on hobgoblins and one hit on a Fighter. 2 # d6 → [4, 5], and 1 # d6 → [1]. Two more hobgoblins slain!

Overall non-player casualties stand at eight (seven hobgoblins, one crossbowman) of 16. That's enough for group morale check! Morale check for the non-players: 2d6 → 6. The last hobgoblin is unaffected, the Men have a hold/standoff result, while the crossbowmen are wont to flee rather than join the fight!

Re: (076) Off the Beaten Track

The Herald, in a commanding voice, says, Throw down your weapons or you all die now!
The Herald will kill that last hobgoblin, given the chance, but he feels like the Men deserve a chance to repent and accept Thuul into their lives.

Re: (076) Off the Beaten Track

The little man's face is covered in blood, and he's weaving from foot to foot, apparently barely standing, but Wetzel, with a strange and almost joyful look on his face, raises his streaming dagger and squares off with the remaining opponents, backing up The Herald's words with the grim intent of his visage.

"Do what the man says, or I'll take you next," he mutters, pointing his dagger at the remaining Hobgoblin.
Wetzel will attack & fight to the last if a majority of the party lean that way, or if any of the enemy does not comply with The Herald's command to disarm, but his preference is to end the fighting here & get some info from the survivors.

Re: (076) Off the Beaten Track

"Nice job, guys!" cheers Boggs, looking at the party's fighters with growing respect. Now that the odds have tipped in the party's favor, he will try to finish off any of the enemy that dare to approach within his reach. His fighting style is low blows with his cudgel, targeting the enemy's knees, ankles, and soft spots, generally avoiding a fair one-on-one fight whenever possible.
Sorry to be cowardly and have Boggs fight defensively up to this point, but if I am reading wayoftheearth's combat transcript correctly, the decision saved him from a hit.

By the way, am I crazy or should Wetzel's helmet have saved him from the 6hp head shot?
