The truly underground sections of the drains are thankfully short. Mostly, they are just cobbled ditches, with the occasional iron grate cover that is so clogged with mud and weeds as to completely conceal a Hobbet crawling along the muddy bottom. After a while, the commotion seems to quieten down ...
