Chainmail does have specific order rules for Attacking from rear or side which gives that attacker priority (page 25 middle of page) . Not sure if that muddies the waters so to speak.

Tass expertly moves out of path of charging Lizardman. It only take a moment to see that things are going badly. He quickly decides to try and help Wraislin before it is too late. If possible he would attack one of the Lizardmen from behind (or the side) with his staff.
