(002) To the Ruins!

The incapacitated foe gives one last bloody splutter as Anwyn leans sharply on her dagger, grinding it down through ringed mail and the gristle of the creature's breast, then cuts loose her stained arrow from its ruined throat. In all, a nasty and messy business.

Meanwhile Caine is satisfied that all of his many blades are securely in place, and Ulric feeds and then ignites his hooded lantern. When the yellow flame sputters to life, you finally have a reasonable light by which to see about you on the dark, blustery heathland.

When, at last, Victor is recovered enough (1d6=3) to move on, everybody is packed and anxious to go. Ulric leads the way with his lantern, heading in the direction by which Rodrick departed some quarter hour earlier -- more or less easterly.

Victor now has 8 (of 11) hit-points.

Roddrick, you have only settled yourself recently when you hear a number of footsteps trudging through the low heath a short distance away. Getting up to investigate, you see a party approaching with a lantern. Thank Thuul, it is your fellows and you are soon reunited.

With that all settled, you collectively clear some of the heath from the gully Rodrick has located, forming a well sheltered semi-circle. It is a far cry from a soft bed and a cosy fire-place, but at least it is somewhat out of the huffy wind.

By the dancing light of Ulric's lantern you each chew into your hack trail tack, and muse over the events of the day. Those in helms and metal armour shed their protection in the hope of getting some small respite, and all unfurl their bed-rolls and blankets.

The night watches are rotated as previously planned, with Ulric's lantern burning low throughout the night. You all hear concerning sounds of wolves and other beast during the night, but thankfully your camp remains undisturbed.

By morning two flasks of lantern oil have been consumed, and a light drizzle has set it. The wind has died away almost completely, and the day looks set to be heavily overcast throughout.

As you chew on your dry breakfast, everybody is cold and damp. Ulric and Rodrick in particular lament the fact that they dare not risk exposing their precious tomes to this persistent drizzle. Rodrick will want to partake of his morning prayers in anycase.

In an unexpected gesture from the ox sized, battle hardened fighting man, Dieter volunteers to hold his cloak over Ulric as he commences his sorcerous studies in the predawn drizzle, reading from his rather disquieting reptilian tome by the flickering lantern light. Further to Dieter's anxiety, the thing itself seems to writhe and hiss if ever a stray drop of water should fall upon it.

By the time Ulric is satisfied, dawn proper has arrived and Dieter's arms are afire with the effort of holding the rain at bay. He shall certainly think twice before offering such a service again.

Meanwhile Rodrick has awoken to kneel in the morning drizzle and contemplate the Enigma of Thuul and the many virtues of The Guardian Path. He prays that he might be more penitent this day, and bring honour by his valour and humility. After all he thanks Thuul for the victory granted the previous evening, and prays that he may be as virtuous again this day.

Rodrick still has The Supplication of Medicant Requite memorised from the previous day. If it should be replaced with an alternate prayer from Thuul's Canon, Dieter may be required to hold his cloak out for a further hour!

Ulric still has The Word of Anthracite Sufferance and The Baleful Somnolence of Morpheus memorised from the previous day. The latter -- having been invoked once already -- would require a d20 roll to be invoked again, but can be memorised once more this morning, or be replaced with one of the other magics from The Grimoire Lusus Naturae.

By the time all this is down, the rest of the party are prepared and ready to set out. It is just gone dawn. The drizzle continues.

Rodrick, it is well beknown to you that any Templar who claims to petition The Guardian Path must devote himself to prayer and contemplation at least twice daily. Such reflection should ideally be conducted at dawn and dusk -- even when in the field of trials.

Should he find himself in the solace of a Temple, a Templar may pray more frequently with the proper clergy -- regular services are held four times daily and, on some occasions, also at midnight.

Considering his rather poor use of the Baleful Somnolence, Ulric decides to study this incantation again rather than risk the potential disaster of missing some key component if he were forced to call on it once again. Once he is finishes he carefully wraps and secures the ancient text, The Grimoire Lusus Naturae. He rises and thanks Dieter for his help.

Ulric makes sure that his lantern is empty and stows it once again in his backpack. He then has a quick breakfast and secures his gear.

"Shall we continue on our journey to the ruins? We chould be there my midday if we keep a good pace I think."
