"The best medicine for you at the moment, Master Olaf, is rest," she says, trying to keep her voice cheerful and mask the look of concern on her face; "To bed with you as soon as your bath is finished. I shall bring you up some food when it is ready."

At Guntrum's mention of 'magic beans' she frowns; "It will take magic or the blessings of a power beyond my own to cure these wounds. They are fell indeed. But we must know these beans' function first, and that is the province of the sorcerer."

"What say you, Lord Ulric?"
"CUT 'EM OPEN!" Olaf shouts, "Bleed me, get the poisons out."

"Calm yourself, my friend," says Josiane gently but firmly; "You are weak enough as it is. This is a poison not of the blood but of the soul. Food and rest - that is your best recourse. The rest of us will do what we can."

She does whatever she can do to allieviate Olaf's sufferings and sees to it he is fed and sleeping. Once this is achieved she goes in search of food and a bath herself.

"I do not think we need fear attack here immediately and we are all sorely in need of rest," she says to the others quietly and out of goblin earshot; "Perhaps some sort of alarm might be rigged by the fireplace to alert us to any intrusion? Other than that, lock doors and windows, keep your garlic close and put your trust in the White Lady and Almighty Thuul to keep us from harm."

She passes a hand across her weary brow; "And now, with your permission, I must rest. This day has been long and full of grief. Let further plans wait until morning..."

"These are interesting items indeed," Ulric says in fascination. "They will not help Olaf, but they may be of great use in the future. Eating one will make you grow larger in size for a short time. Keep them safe Guntram."

Having seen to Olaf, Ulric returns to his room to check on his possessions, possible furniture the goblins might have purchased, and to account for any coinage he might have recovered from the crypt (Remains of the Day, post #613).

The goblin prepared meal is plonked onto the table in the great hall, and the servants leave those of the company who are still downstairs to muse over what they have learned, what they have lost, and what they have gained.

The stew is thin and rather bland; more of a dirty soup in truth. Not a patch on what poor Wibert would have prepared, that much is assured. But it is at least warm, and will soften the hard bread too.

Ulric, Highbough and Desmond/Mondes each returned from the tomb with a pocket full or so of the old electrum coins, and lay these out on the table for consideration. Alas most of them were spilled or dropped in the frantic effort to escape the tomb alive.

Ulric has (3d6=11) almost a dozen on them, Highbough (3d6=10) ten, and Desmond/Mondes (6d6=21 (there's got to be some advantage to having two heads)) has a score of them. That is 42 ep all told. Not withstanding the fell blade, which glowers like a chunk of ice in Guntrum's pack.

Dorgan clears his throat and weighs in on the topic.

"Way I see it is, we ain't ready to go back inta the tomb just yet. We're short on coin, which we may need to convince the priests to heal Olaf, and short on ways to stop them undead."

He looks around to see if his words are sinking in with the rest of the party.

"Might do us some good to clear out the tunnels beneath this place, see if there's anything of value down there. Ulric, you know if yer fellow mages'd pay for centipede venom? Mebbe we can make a few coppers off'a that creeper downstairs..."

"Or mebbe the more... uh, educated among us can do some readin' and find out what hurts the undead 'sides holy water. See if we can get some a that on the cheap."

"I agree with Dorgan," says Josiane wearily; "We need coin to buy the tools we will need for a return to the tomb. The tunnels below this place offer the promise of that, not to mention a swift escape to friendly ground to rest and recuperate. It would be a sensible next step to at least learn more about them."

The poor girl is almost out on her feet. If a swift concensus can be reached she will retire to bed with all the haste she may...

Although just before she goes, a thought strikes her.

"Were there any bones or other refuse left over from luncheon? If we were to gather those they might provide bait to draw all the vermin below to one spot where oil and a torch could make a swift end of them. That might save us much toil and loss..."
