The remaining Orcs make a morale roll (1d6=6) and their courage holds! Not every black servant is without courage, and these suspect that the day-creatures are on the brink of calamity.
Eremin attempts to withdraw from the fighting, and the mounts that remain are scattering in panic to the far ends of the valley amid flee enemy. Baraglin hasn't had a moment to ready his sling and fights on with his blade -- firing into the melee would be madness in any case. Celgin, Ardenbard and Nat are relatively safe in the mouth of Hollin Gate, where Arbenbard's ranting in the Black Speech seems to have done its work.
Only ten of the boldest Orcs remain to give battle.
Attack are resolved simultaneously; (randomise Orc targets; 1=Largo, 2=Eremin, 3=Baraglin, 4=Dernfara, 5=Elindir, 6=Legandir, 7=Hallam, 8=Hrok, 9=Lomeluin, 10=Soval, 11=Sili, 12=Sutherland. 10d12=6, 1, 12, 3, 8, 8, 9, 5, 11, 2).
The fighting has reached its grand finale, and the Orc blows fall thus; Largo (1d20=6), Lomeluin (1d20=2), Sili (1d20=13), and Sutherland (1d20=10) all dodge blows aimed at them, as does Hrok (2d20=2) fend off a first attacker. But a second monster (1d20=16) delivers a smarting blow while his defenses are elsewhere, and Hrok is forced to sacrifice his shield or else perish (would otherwise have been a fatal 6 hit point blow).
Alas Eremin (finghting defensively as he withdraws) cannot escape soon enough and an Orcish mace is aimed to smash his face (1d20=16) and strikes a cruel blow for (2dd=1,5) 5 hit points. Poor Eremin Sulk of Bree is struck down!
Baraglin the Hobbit is also gashed by an Orc blade (1d20=18) most fiercely, and feels the hot cut burning upon his chest for (2dd=1,3) 3 hit points.
Elindir (1d20=15) and Legandir (1d20=19) the half Elves are also stabbed and cut by crude implements for (2dd=6,1 and 2,4) 6 and 4 hit points respectively. Alas, Elindir Half Elven is run through and falls!
But not before the company replies in kind. The storm of hacking, slewing, chopping and hewing blades, spears and axes rages on!
(14d20; Largo=17, Baraglin=16, Dernfara=9,7, Elindir=15, Legandir=6, Hallam=1, Hrok=19, Lomeluin=4, Soval=20,1, Sili=4,20, Sutherland=7).
Legandir, Hallam, Lomeluin and Sutherland are defeated by canny and agile Orcs; their blows deflecting off toughen hide or grimy blades.
Largo finds better success, plunging his dagger into an Orc groin to produce a squeal and (1dd=2) 2 hit points of damage. But with its existing wounds, this is enough to incapacitate the monster. Baraglin too, punctures an Orc through the belly with his short sword for (2dd=6,3) 6 hit points, dropping it. For all his talk of kettles amid the battle, morning tea still seems a long way off.
Dernfara is horribly tired now, but even so he catches one Orc unaware in the flashing arcs of his deadly two swords (2dd=4,3) for 7 hit points, seriously wounding it but not ending it.
Elindir's final flourish with his blade of Rivendell is as masterful as one might expect of any Elf; (2dd=5,5) a graceful flash that neatly severs an Orcish head just before one of its fellows spears him.
Hrok at last find a foe that will stand toe-to-toe with him, and deals it a crushing blow to the chest with his axe (2dd=3,6) for 7 hit points, but he can scarce believe that even this is not enough to slay the foul thing!
The great heroes Soval and Sili toil on with blade and flail (both rolled 20s!). Soval paces down the greatest standing Orc and (2dd=2,4) and deals it a grim blow of 7 hit points, but the great Orc is not finished. Sili likewise meets the black lieutenant (2dd=4,3) and deals him 7 hit points of damage. He too is staggered, but fights on!
The Orcs are all but vanquished! But at what cost?
