The company spill into the room, everyone craning the necks looking this way and that for trip wires, loose stones, or runes carved into the flags. But they none of them spy any such.
The chamber, more or less, has the form of a great "+" shape, with tapered roofs overhead boasting wooden rafters among the upper spaces, which are also cluttered with old cobwebs.
The many gargoyle-esque busts carved around the roof line seem mainly gathered over the four door arches. These seem of humanoid form, and are mostly covering their eyes, ears or mouths with their hands.
However, the main feature in the room is the central well. It is a wide circular thing made of rough stones stacked to nearly waist high. At its right hand side (as you entered) is a bulky winch mechanism. A thick chain with wooden pegs spaced along it runs up from the depths to the winch mechanism, then from there up over a pulley suspended in the timbers above the well, before descending back down the well-shaft.
The well-shaft itself is generously wide, perhaps 10ft or so, and vanishes into darkness below.
What now?
