Ugh! Old Highbough's memory is starting to go...

Is Dieter (or anyone else) actively taking fire damage? If so Highbough will attempt to smother the flames with his cloak.

If he doesn't see an opportunity to play fireman, he will draw his sword and fight defensively, supporting Pelenwin's push to drive the enemy back.

Foe #6 is not over Dieter. It is #2 and #4 that will tear him apart this round, given half a chance...

I was thinking Pelenwin would defend himself with a swipe at #6 then move over to defend Dieter.

Alternatively, Pelenwin will charge over towards Dieter pole axe in hand and make a mighty thrust towards #4. "No beast slays Dieter, the Undying Stalwart of Ket. Back to the fires from which you came!"

The melee continues into a 3rd round.

Ulric (1d20=17) and Wibert (1d20=6) both find safe targets and loose their missiles from the dais. Wibert misses, but Ulric knocks foe #2 on the back of the noggin for (1dd=3) 3 hit points, attracting its ire away from Dieter. It turns and rushes at the wizard...

Meanwhile Boris, Highbough and Koch are make their charges into combat but they will not attack before those already engaged...

Initiative is rolled for those already embroiled in the melee (1d6; Pelenwin=5(-1), Gustave=1, Desmond=4(+1), Mads=3(+1), the Foe=3).

Pelenwin bellows his war cry and leaps to the aid of the stricken Stalwart of Ket, distracting the vicious enemy even as it is about to rip Dieter's bare throat out with its fangs. Pelenwin's huge axe falls (1d20=20!) as a Fist of Seyal should (4dd=5,5,5,6) for a glorious 15 hit points cleaving the foe so completely in twain that the fiery cinders of its demise implode upon itself and do not consume Pelenwin nor Dieter (it wouldn't seem fair to burn you on a 20).

Across the room Mads makes his stand (1d20=20! again!) and hews mightily about him (4dd=1,5,3,6) for 6 hit-points, putting another of the hellish creations to a fire-storm grave without suffering any of the flames himself.

Desmond works his way into the fight now along side Gustave (1d20=19) stabbing one of the three monsters clawing at him and his ally (1dd=2) for 2 stinging hit points, but it only infuriates the ugly thing.

Now Boris is confronted by the horrid creature intent upon exacting its revenge on Ulric, and fends off its ungainly claw attacks (1d20=7), but Pelenwin is struck from behind (1d20=17) just moments after saving Dieter from certain death. The monster's claws rend mail and flesh for (1dd=5) 5 hit points! Highbough also pays for getting involved in the melee (1d20=13) suffering a (1dd=1) small gash as he expertly deflects his horrible foe's spiny claw attack.

Meanwhile Desmond and Gustave are hard pressed to hold back three of the savage things, two slashing at Desmond (for they seem to favour a smaller, apparently weaker target) (2d20=14,5) with one of them beating the Halfling's defences and scratching him down the chest for (1dd=3) 3 hit points. Gustave manages to hold off the other beast, however (1d20=7).

Mads and Koch likewise fend off the fury of slashing claws and snapping fangs aimed at them (2d20=10,4).

At last Boris, Highbough, and Koch bring weapons to bear (3d20=16,15,3). Boris smashes his mace into the monster's demented face (2dd=4,1) for 4 more hit points, dealing a sickening blow that collapses its skull in a gout of black blood and crunching spines before the beast explodes under the impact. (1d20=13) Boris too is caught in the fire (1dd=4) but his shield is consumed as it protects him from the flames.

Highbough demonstrates his ancient art, slicing his sinuous Elvish blade neatly and exactly efficiently under his foe's thorny rib cage, striking a precision slash at its gut-region (2dd=5,6) for 6 hit points! But while this wound would surely drop any Man, the hellish fiend doesn't even pause in its rabid attacks, not even to gather the blacked guts and intestinal worms that tumble from the ghastly wound.

Koch fares not so well (1d20=3) his foe deflecting his carpenter's hammer far too easily.
