With a great battle-cry, Sili whirls and feints with his torch at the lead troll's face; simultaneously he lashes at its ankles with his flail, hoping perhaps to knock it off-balance on the stairs.

Initiative is rolled (1d6; Norin=1; Sili=6; Trolls=4).

The Dwarves suddenly turn on their heels and mount a counter attack against the pursuing Trolls upon their forefathers' stair. The Trolls cannot stop their harrowing descent as nimbly as the Dwarves, however, and barge into them at pace.

Sili is swiftest and (still grasping the crossbow in his other mitt) strikes first with his burning torch (1d20=17) punching it fiercely into the scaly belly of the nearest Troll for (1dd=2) 4 hit points as it crashes past him, aiming a lashing claw at his head (1d20=8) but missing wildly.

The second Troll is barrelling into Norin before he knows it (1d20=5) but by instinct he turns its heavy fist aside upon his armoured chest and uses the momentum to fuel his hammer blow (1d20=5) but he can only split ancient flagstone in the tumult.

The Elves too turn about, some 60ft farther down the stair, with bowstrings taught and pointed arrows flicking here and there seeking for a safe target --

(Elves; you may fire into the melee this round if you wish. Odd numbered attack rolls will be randomly targeted between appropriate candidates).

l Lomeluin
L Legandir
E Elindir
N Norin
S Sili
1, 2, 3 Trolls

Of course positions are not static. It is a tumbling melee of the most violent sort with the Trolls howling and flailing abominably!

Legandir searches for a clear shot but quickly judges the tumult of bodies too much of a risk even for his keen hunters eye.

"This enemy is beyond us, I will seek help", he says in Sindarin, and is gone, sprinting down the stair.

Lmluin curses under his breath, then calls out; "Sili! Norin! Fall back! Let our arrows cover your retreat!"

He then steps forward to stand opposite Elindir on the left side of the stair, trying to ascertain which of the Trolls is the most badly wounded while still looking for a clear shot.

You don't have to tell Sili twice. He will fall back and let the Elves shoot a round of arrows, while he readies his flail for melee combat.
